The guy on the left, because he wrote very good books and strove for honesty and clarity no matter what.
The guy on the left was a bad writer who wrote muddledly with forced emotions instead of ideas.
I feel bad for fyodor though, he had it very rough with the gambling and his mental health issues, among other personal tragedies of his.

Dostoevsky is better from what I've read. Tolstoy perfectionism makes his writing come off a bit unnatural

They should be read in conjunction with one another. isolating them means they both lose a degree of what makes them so great.

That said, Dostoyevsky

His presentation of the Russian spirit, based conception of God and Christianity, pushes his philosophical themes through realistic narratives as opposed to shitty extended metaphors and you realise his writing style is beautiful once you read the original Russian. Russian - English translation in general is difficult, but considering the importance of Russian national culture and identity in his works. a substantial amount gets lost in translation with him.

Dostoevsky is probably the number one culprit among all the famous figures of world literature for pushing his philosophical themes through unrealistic narratives. No one in their right mind would judge The Idiot to have a more realistic plot than Anna Karenina.
