Nevermind, I had a ministroke and forgot what you originally asked. I'll still add, if a NCO catches you reading in the military, they'll generally assume you're slacking off and will put you to work (sweeping the motor pool) even if there really is nothing to be done. Beetle Bailey is actually a pretty realistic depiction of enlisted life, atleast in combat arms jobs.

John Lomax’s Cowboy Songs and Other Frontier Ballads was the first popular collection of cowboy songs and did a lot to spread the mythos of the old west. There’s outlaw ballads but most songs are about the shitty everyday toil of real cowboys. Once you read the lyrics you’ll want to find recorded versions to listen to.
