As a literal spanish speaker this was accurate a few centuries back; however the sixteen hundred’s vowel shift also fell upon certain pronunciations which where later consolidated by the Royal Spanish Academy. During Cervantes’ time the C would have made that «sh» sound, however even that was on it’s way out. The «X» is now an archaic grapheme for the «J» sound which, to anglophone ears, is basically an aspirated “H”.
