This book is kicking my ass. I feel like there are so many deeper meanings I am missing in the dialogues. What are some essential commentaries I can read to help me understand?

I think starting with the Romans could help.
Read Epictetus and Boethius. After that, go back to Plato.

I don’t get why this is required reading for philosophy. Socrates would be a joke if he lived in modern times.
>bro this uneducated slave boy was able to answer some geometrical questions therefore the soul is immortal
Total balderdash. The only reason I’m trudging through this rigmarole is on the hope that something good will come of it eventually. But Socrates seems only to be an arrogant retard who consistently makes retarded arguments. I can see how he is symbolically important in the sense that he represents “what philosophy is supposed to be about” with his open dialogue and questioning of everything. But as a philosopher he is utterly garbage.

Plato is probably too deep for you.
You should stick with Sam Harris and Bertrand Russell

the point is not to "get" it all in one read. secondary sources are useful of course but you should also reread these dialogues from time to time

Do you think scholars ignore the original Greek when trying to interpret its meaning?

I really like going through Pierre Grimes videos on YouTube after reading one of plato's dialogues.
Always leave with a little something extra. His teaching is based upon Socrates and even aligns himself with philosophic midwifery.
Try looking up one of his discussions of a dialogue like lysis. It is not dry, shallow, and you will leave wanting to learn more. Like the opposite of Sadler.

Not an in-depth commentary, but the first chapter of Erich Auerbach's Dante: Poet of the Secular World has some very interesting things to say about Plato.

>In the dialogue form that he created there is, strictly speaking ... no dramatic situation... in the quiet movement of the dialogue, men of all ages pass before the judgment seat of truth, constrained ... to lay bare their willingness, devotion, resolution. Here the soul must prove its courage and nobility, its inherent truth, as the body must prove its strength and skill in an athletic contest ... to be weighed in scales of the utmost precision...

There are only 10-15 pages worth of remarks, but they're very thought-provoking.

They are different developments in Platonism, they don't always interpret him correctly and very often are just not Plato's philosophy which loses its depth in the array of literal extrapolation- it's Platonism.
