This is easily the best recommendation you guys have ever given me and I'm burning through it, thank you. I'm going to need something else to read soon. Can any of you recommend anything as good, nearly as good or better than this? It doesn't have to be ancient Greek literature.

If you want more history, try Livy or Plutarch. Roman history is fun, too.

Will do. I'm grateful for all recommendations. Thank you.

There's a chart with other books like this, think it is on the wiki.

>> No.14880535

Thucydides, Tacitus, Plutarch, Edward Gibbon, Shelby Foote, Toynbee

Thank you so much. Any particular books from them that you'd especially recommend?

You and your chart have been very helpful. Thank you. Any other recommendations are very welcome.

You're a great person and I wish I could reciprocate your kindness, but I don't know how to.

Read Xenophon's Anabasis and Cyropaedia, they're great and often forgotten.

>> No.14880718

Look up the landmark editions of these histories, they’ve only made 5 but they’re incredibly useful, full of maps and additional information and shit.

Alexander’s campaigns by Arrian doesn’t get recommended enough around here. Shame his sequel detailing the wars over Alexander’s empire and eventual setting of the stage for Rome has been lost to time.

Great stuff, anons. Thank you.

>> No.14881827

Suetonius Twelve Caesars. Spicy and quite funny, but also grotesque.

Any recommend version of the histories?

Landmark for sure. Like another Anon said, it has great footnotes, maps, pictures, and other details.

Seconded. The Landmark Ancient Histories kick ass. Also forthcoming:
The Landmark Polybius: The Federation and Conquest of the Greek States (2021?)
The Landmark Xenophon's Anabasis.
