How do you build your vocabulary? Does anyone have any good vocabulary lists?

Increasing your vocabulary is EXTREMELY dangerous, you run the risk of spamming new words you learn making it obvious you are trying to show off or whatever AND you run the risk of using a word in what would be a dictionary correct definition but in reality the word isn't used like that.

The latter is very common when writing and using a thesaurus

it isn't just about learning new words, but also finding new contexts to use those words within effectively; otherwise you'll just be spouting language without any real meaning as >>14876852 said

The biggest single thing that has helped me has been reading rhetoric theory or speeches. It doesn't help with vocabulary per se but it does help with having a more nuanced and more linguistically "deep" ability. Reading fiction or poetry do different things for you. So perhaps I can persuade you to try reading some books on rhetoric for its effect on your writing.

Read book reviews, NY review of books for example or any art criticism for that matter.
