>Wake up at 5 AM
For the average person, where taking a nap or something isn't a viable option, there are two real options available:

Option 1: go to sleep earlier, wake up earlier
Result: no net hourly gain. I'm pretty sure this was the thinking behind daylight savings: "cut the bottom off a towel and sew it to the top, and you'll get a longer towel." Except you don't, you're just moving the "productive" hours over.

Option 2: go to sleep at the same time, wake up earlier
Result: loss of sleep, with resulting losses to focus, energy, and overall productivity. If you want to know how much sleep you need, go a week or two without using an alarm to wake up. Getting any less than that over a period of time will lead to efficiency loss.

Yeah, great in theory, but give most people welfare payments and food stamps so that they have leisure time and they do NOT learn new languages or write novels. They tend to get high and drunk and, if female, have more babies=money from the government. Otium, the freedom from work is for the few that can take proper advantage of it. Most people are simply incapable of being self-directing. They are much better off with a job, creating wealth for themselves and their society, and providing the resources needed to create leisure. You realise of course that SOMEONE has to work in order to support the people who aren't "wage slaves", right?

Actually the thinking behind daylight savings was to make it brighter later, so people use lights less to save energy for the war (WWII).

In actuality, DST has no or a negligible effect on energy consumption so it's completely pointless. The day DST happens is apparently one of the worst non-holiday days for automobile accidents because of loss of sleep.

Such little willpower and self-awareness to even slightly admit that having coffee as part of a routine might be an addiction. I'm not judging you though because I know that the realization of these vices masquerading as personality traits, or worse, virtues, is something nearly super-human.
The same goes for music, too. Do you ever find yourself pressing 'next' over and over again to find that "good music track"? Have you never given thought to what that might be? A literal Skinner box in your car, in your hand, at the gym -- with its output going directly into your head.

by that logic any form of routine or habit is an addiction. If you exercise everyday, are you addicted to exercise? Maybe, but why is that necessarily a bad thing. >by that logic any form of routine or habit is an addiction
No, by that logic anything that controls you without you realizing is an addiction. Living with the realization yet in denial that it controls you is addiction. People can get addicted to anything -- even exercise as you pointed out -- and this is mostly through them living without the realization that it controls them. See food, music, coffee, or gossip and daily rituals for a non-exhaustive list.

>Being ‘addicted’ to healthy things is fine
Addiction is not healthy. The exercise addict whose only release is exercise sees drastic mood fluctuations when they do not get their 'fix'.

>Your compulsive need for self control betrays
Imagine having the divine within you to realize you can control your life and rid yourself of vices -- not that indulgences are vices -- and yet still giving into your mortal aspect.

>Are you ashamed of your natural impulses?
To be ashamed of my natural impulses is to deny my humanity.

>But when all people have become useless, self-prop systems will find no advantage in taking care of anyone. The techies themselves insist that machines will soon surpass humans in intelligence. When that happens, people will be superfluous and natural selection will favor systems that eliminate them-if not abruptly, then in a series of stages so that the risk of rebellion will be minimized.

>Even though the technological world-system still needs large numbers of people for the present, there are now more superfluous humans than there have been in the past because technology has replaced people in many jobs and is making inroads even into occupations formerly thought to require human intelligence. Consequently, under the pressure of economic competition, the world's dominant self-prop systems are already allowing a certain degree of callousness to creep into their treatment of superfluous individuals. In the United States and Europe, pensions and other benefits for retired, disabled, unemployed, and other unproductive persons are being substantially reduced; at least in the U. S., poverty is increasing; and these facts may well indicate the general trend of the future, though there will doubtless be ups and downs.
