Sure it's possible, but why wouldn't an author just make their own setting instead of being contained in one created by someone else?

I always found Shadow of the Torturer very video-game like, really engrossing.

Also anything by Philip K Dick or Strugatski matches the feeling I get when play a good single player game (think Deus Ex)

I've also hear some Warhammer 40k novels are really really good.

No way this is going to work but oh well....

I don't care as much about the fantasy or D&D aspect and like it more due the character being stuck in conflict between different fractions, and having a manipulative succubus in his head who doubles as the mentor and love interest. Bet it could work in a sci-fi scenario too with Xana being a voice over some brain-chip connection or some magical realism shit with possession.

This game is really important to me. It's so clean, so simple, nothing else really matches it. Jennifer Government by Max Barry is a closer fit than Neuromancer; Mirror's Edge is barely cyberpunk. Perdido Street Station by China Mieville is like its opposite. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is slightly similar. I'd love nothing more than a good ME continuation story, unfortunately there isn't even any interesting fanfics

There's one you're forgetting sir, that I would argue has had similar sized impact on the world of media, that Heart of Darkness did, it came from the same time period, and it's not even a novel.

The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell

Also, here's an all time classic for starters.

DOOM 1993-94
What book has writing as abstract yet completely functional and intuitive like DOOM's levels, faced paced action and demon/monster capping and slashing, and where the literary floor can drop out from beneath your feet, or elevate you away from all the madness below, or, bring you up out of the frying pan, and into the fire? What book can turn off the literary lights in the room, drop 3 major literary walls all around you, and release spawning hordes of demons from the holes behind the now non existent walls? How about where the shape of the play area can drastically change shape and elevation, many times in the course of a single level?
