... he's highly overrated. When you really sit to think about it, Lovecraft's stories were too personal to really frighten the reader. Tales such as the Dunwich Horror, Arthur Jermyn, The Shadow Over Innsmouth and the like fall apart when you realize that the tentacled monstrosities are just a way for Lovecraft to "demonstrate" the unspeakable evils of miscegenation, rant about minorities, technology and seafood, all of which aren't scary. The only upside is the decent prose.
