If you lump Iran in that category, that have droves of great literature. I advise starting with Magnificum-Dominum Khomeini (pbuh).

I've been on an Africa binge lately. I've read lots of shit books and lots of great ones. Some of the greats:
God's Bits of Wood by Sembene Ousmane
Leopold Senghor's poetry
For Bread Alone by Mohamed Choukri
The Fortunes of Wangrin by Amadou Hampate Ba

‘We Need New Names’ by NoViolet Bulawayo (retarded pen name) is, surprise! About Zimbabwean life. The prose is retarded, and no I’m not exaggerating in the slightest. No free PDF available to my knowledge so pick it up from the library but DO NOT BUY IT. Holy shit it’s a terrible book, but the author is from Zimbabwe.
>no mention of Mugabe
>no mention of Rhodesia
>no mention of the recency of the nation’s emergence
>claims to be, and is hailed as, significant, cynical, and socially biting critique of Zimbabwean life and American life
>”white devil! White thief!” This and “our black brothers must rise up!” That.
Phew. Terrible “literature” and I was lookin for good African stuff too! Know any good books on the Zulu or Masai? ‘Hunting Cape buffalo with masai’ is a good short story if you don’t mind a hunter’s perspective

That’s not third world, that’s LEDCs
Third world refers specifically to countries that were unaligned during the Cold War
This is also why people who say that USA is third world are retarded, they don’t know what third second and first world mean, the US is by definition first world because first world countries were defined as those aligned with the USA in the Cold War. Russian/USSR aligned countries were the second world

Machado is widely read among portuguese speaking population. I recommend you start out with O Alienista. As a brazilian myself, his the only writer in this country I could say I'm proud of.

You're literally the only person who's heard of or bothered reading that book. If you want peak-quality literature from Zimbabwe, read the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency books. As a bonus it's written by a white dude.
If you dig the Masai, read Out of Africa.

Philippine literature is pretty slept upon. If you can read Spanish, Rizal's duology of Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo is a good starting point. Plenty of English writers too: Jose Garcia Villa, Nick Joaquin, and F. Sionil Jose are probably the most famous names outside the country.
