Most people actually have some qualitative contextual understanding of the difference between the two but haven't clearly defined it enough to naturally choose the correct one or determine the validity of individual cases

Honestly though, this all just stems from the completely retarded ways we teach grammar to American kids. The fact that most people only ever see a phrase structure diagram if they choose to take linguistics in college is unforgiveable, that's one of the most useful visual intuitions you can instill in someone hoping to understand grammar and easily cuts through any subject/object ambiguity (I honestly don't blame people for confusing the two given how poorly the difference is often communicated)
