How do I stop myself from becoming the Underground man? I could relate with a lot of his thoughts, minus the blatant misogyny and narcissistic tendencies.

Dosto's answer in his later novels was faith, but I live in an atheist country so I would just be alienated even more.

Embrace your fear and act in spite if it.

Fear leads to bitterness.

The same way you stop yourself from becoming Ignatius or Don Quixote.

By finding out who your enemies are and fighting your inner demons.
Finding something beautiful to occupy yourself with helps a lot.
I'm a Catholic living in an atheist country but it feels like they're stuck with me, not the other way around. You just have to be passionate about your beliefs - what's the worst that can happen that didn't happen to someone in history already? Lose my fucking job?

the thing is, I'm not a believer, I'm talking about a hypothetical leap of faith here

You seem to be a rational, self aware person from what you posted. Hold on to that

Sounds to me like you'd benefit from reading pic related. This could help you to find something within you you thought you didn't have, even if you're anglo.

thanks anon, from what I've seen most people seen to despise the Underground man. So when I find a part of myself in him (the incoherent thought process, the self-isolation, the destructive masochistic self-pity and lack of motivation in modern society), I can't just ignore it as I'm aware that thinking I would be different than others with similar feelings group would just be my own bias towards myself.

I'm not even anglo, but my French isn't good enough to read the original

You recognizing this and wanting to make a change puts you above others. I have someone in my family who recognises that something's not right but does nothing to change it - that is the underground man.
>but my French isn't good enough to read the original
You can read it in English, it's perfectly fine. And since you're not Anglo you are definitely able to become faithful.

The underground man was based. He believed what he believed about the society. His mistake was directing his anger against himself instead of turning it into something constructive.

P.S. Dostoevsky was a cuck

I just finished reading this for college and had the exact same worries. This book depresses me because my professor talked about how terrible of a human he is and then I ended up finding qualities of myself in the first part. Not so much the second though. I dont want to be a bitter shitter but damn sometimes it's just so hard to interact with society. It can be like pulling teeth

How much of your belief do you think is actually just the comfort of knowing so many millions of people before you have held those beliefs fervently and seriously?
Not trying to attack your faith at all, don't take it that way, I am really interested in knowing your opinion
