Pascals wager gets immediately BTFO'd because anyone could come up to you and say "kill yourself and you'll go to heaven", and that puts an infinite positive value on killing yourself so you logically have to do it; but then someone else could come up as you're about to pull the trigger and say "don't kill yourself and you'll go to heaven" and now you there is an infinite positive value on not killing yourself, but also on killing yourself. It would turn the world into some fucked up version of that movie "Yes Man".

No, you don't have to, but what I'm saying is that you're making sweeping statements based on the co-opting of the Christian faith by a handful of very public and very disingenuous organizations. There is nothing cohesive about Christian views on immigration, nor is there anything incompatible between Christianity and the desire to preserve one's own way of life. This has never been a controversial thought until very recently in the public discourse.

This all aside, this doesn't change the fact that the countries with the least religiously influenced populace seem to be doing the most to bring in religious Africans, so I'm not sure what you're getting at here.

Define equal. Not being snarky, what do you mean by this term? Deserving of equal opportunity? Equal in intelligence or usefulness or beauty or some other quality? Equally worthy of your personal esteem?

I don't think Christianity asks any of this, nor should it. We are "equal" in the eyes of God, which is to see we are all held to a standard of moral responsibility and conversely, moral potential. This doesn't mean I have to like everyone, only love them. Love can exist where affection doesn't.

He was a mathematician who had a religious experience that he interpreted through reason. The Wager isn't an 'argument' so much as it is a way to entice his readers into developing a personal relationship with God: there is a "God-sized hole" inside every man that needs to be filled, and to do so (and reap the benefits) you must overcome 'rational' secular doubt. It's a gambit.

I agree, he was a genius. Deeply religious thinkers treat the work they do as a form of worship, which I think explains some of the brilliance of figures like Dante/Mallory/Pascal. Obviously they had tremendous innate talent, too.

If you're happier and more productive as a theist, why not just be one?

>> No.14788324

They can’t. Atheists are terrified of the notion of God existing deep down, so they pretend it doesn’t bother them. Always in the back of their mind there remains a tiny sliver of doubt, reminding them that hellfire could await.

>> No.14788326

>>14788193
The funny thing is how theists believe this is a good thing. That people who could otherwise explain everything by just pointing to god seem to be so unnerved by his lack of presence that they look for science to find answers. Even if you cherry pick "deeply religious" people to claim they are the greatest (I'm guessing you think Galileo was deeply religious too for instance), you still have the problem of "Why would a deeply religious person turn to science in any way shape or form"?

Deep down you know they doubt god. Anything else is mental gymnastics.

This post is just massive cope. Gallileo was religious, yes, do you disagree? Newton and Leibniz are two others. As for your claim that you can’t be religious and scientist, I can only disagree. Why would you not want to study Gods creation? There is beauty in this world, and we want to know more about it. Lastly, it just sounds like some odd projection to me that you think these people were posers and were in reality atheist. That has not been my experience at all. IMO, an atheist who wishes God was real is just a Christian having a crisis of faith. Most of the atheists I know consider the existence of God to be a distant and absurd proposition that has no bearing on life. Like, you may as well wish the sky was green.

Why not? Haven't you heard the alternative argument? That we suffer, die, and live again ad infinitum until we are saved?
