Ralph Ellison, Richard Wright, Jane Austen, Charlotte and Emily Bronte, Marguerite Yourcenar's Memoirs of Hadrian (best choice imo), Ayn Rand, George Eliot, Virginia Woolf, Tale of Genji, Jean Rhys Wide Sargasso Sea, Daphne Du Maurier's Rebecca, Gone With the Wind, To Kill a Mockingbird, Origins of Totalitarianism, Black Lamb and Grey Falcon, The Second Sex. Those are all worth reading.
