There have been crazy artists who are obsessed with art despite having never been looked at.

Schizos are not narcissists and we would like to spread that message. Stop equating us to attention whores. Everyone likes a little praise, but leave us the fuck alone.

it makes sense how a comic artist would think that. this IS, after all, the definition of art for anyone alive today (e.g. anyone reading this post). historically, though, it was the opposite. before the ~1800's, was a sacrificial act, about ESCAPING the self, to convey the glory of God. i'm not into that kind of art, so someone else can probably better explain that older sense.

but was that really the purpose of their art or just the best way to get religious people to look at them/not burn them?

That was the purpose. Shakespeare was crypto-Catholic but there wasn't anything too Christian about his work. He was inspired by God, not in terms of artistic meme influence, but in aspirational terms.

containing vague elements of something doesn't necessarily imply that's your secret purpose. maybe he wanted people to look at him and the best way to do that was authentically with things he knew.

He was a financially failed poet looking to make some quick coins. He didn't think of his art as this high art. Theatre was consider a low form of entertainment for the most part.

wrong. notions like nature, god, or art are not objective entities or actions that constitute the world, but mere categories to classify it. they are therefore useless to do anything else that organize human life.

>tfw have a literary talent to become the greatest writer of the era, but don't think that mankind deserves to be blessed by my works
>tfw have hundreds of stories in my head which could rival the finest examples of Western Canon, but my days are filled by more important tasks, such as beating videogames and fapping to JAV
>tfw I realise that all the brightest literary minds work like that
>tfw I feel connected to the astral plane of Chad novelists who fill it with the purified big dick energy of their unrealised masterworks and enjoy the divine presence of the Unwritten

Deleuze describes this as "writing about one's little affair". Literature is about speaking for those who do not have a voice. It is clear that the author has a disfigured understanding of art.
