Talk about books, motherfuckers. Talk about books! Talk about this book. What did you think of it? How about the Nadsat slang? I didn't realise there was a glossary.

>> No.1475386

Glossary is only in the US version. Because Americans are dumb.

>> No.1475396

My version doesn't have a glossary. Why would I need one?

>> No.1475405

Mine didn't have a glossary either. I just eventually picked up on the words.
The book itself I thought was great, but Burgess himself called it over-rated compared to his other work, so I guess I'll have to read his other novels to see how it compares.

The books is actually annoying as fuck. Burgess says they were "dressed in the fashion" but never says what that is. Poor writing.

I have a British version that has a glossary. It's pretty interesting.

it's supposed to represent the view that the next generation is always far more violent and antisocial than the one before.

By not describing the fashion he is able to keep it focused in an indefinite future which keeps it relevant.

My American version doesn't have a glossary. WTF are you talking about.

>>1475411

No. It's the narrator speaking with the stylized colloquialism which is mostly the author's invention. It's acceptable.

If your creative writing 101 TA told you that's "bad writing," fuck him with a neutron bomb.

Mine had a glossary but I only noticed it was there after I'd finished the book. I didn't need it anyway.

It's bad writing. Get over it.

I think is way much deeper than that, I found in this book a very lucid vision of the tipe of world that await us, just like in 1984 or farenheit (more apocaliptic thou). Is not only about violence but about how they are removing the freedom, the youth are the only ones who protest in their way, but in the end they become one more sheep, everything is lost my friend, is what this book is telling you about.
Note: sorry for my english (im spanish)

I'm pretty sure Burgess was against the whole glossary idea. I can see where he's coming from - if you can just look the weird words up in the back of the book, you're not really engaging eith them, not trying to actually understand them. Talking with the lingo of another generation is difficult, and Nadsat makes that the case for everyone. If you use a glossary, it's like when you used to do language translations in school with a ditionary and grammar sheet for every word.

Kinda like the Chinese Room, brah.
