Be honest, has anyone here ever published anything?

It's seems like the most convoluted labyrinth ever created---impossible to penetrate unless you know someone.

Agents are the most useless parasites I can think of, yet it's said that it's impossible to get anything looked at without them--how the fuck are talentless agents the gatekeepers of anything?

This kind of nepotism is what is killing literature, music, film, everything.

most books and movies don't make a large profit though, but they're still made.

Not every movie has to be Endgame or Avatar. All it has to do is make ROI and taking chances on random fucks writing their garbage is appealing to exactly 0 people with a modicum of business sense. If you want to rail against publishing then your fight is with, as anon said, the necessity of turning profit.

fair, but most still need to be regarded as being profitable even if whoever is providing the funding isn't expecting a major return.

I mean, yeah but no.

Agents help you to get a better cut and ideally keep most of the non writing related stuff aside of marking off you. If publishers just hired more editors to take on the flood of shit agents are exposed too, writers would get even less money.

>impossible to penetrate unless you know someone.
That's also bullshit. There are enough success stories of people with zero pull in the business getting in. Agents get 100s of queries every month, and most of these are utter shit from people who couldn't even do basic research. If you got that covered, and your story isn't some bizarro mess only interesting for 4chains spergs, your chances to get one aren't too bad. Just, getting one doesn't guarantee shit.

They are made out of expectations that some will blow up. It's gambling from all sides.
