How do you talk about literature with people without sounding cringe? I've had people try to talk to me about literature/art in person but it always comes off as tryhard even when they are being sincere and not pretentious.

1. Stop believing in “cringe”
2. Don’t be such a tryhard

The only response I have is to question if you even know what pretension actually is. Watching channels like Paper Bird on youtube I assure you they will confound you without needing "big words". You can google any word, its not like its ever difficult

People who don't believe in cringe are usually the cringe ones.

I'm talking about big words I'm talking about having a conversation on art/literature beyond just "Yeah I'm a fan of his". I've never seen it done where it wasn't just embarrassing. Usually it sounds like this even if it's well intentioned.

Look at /lit/ half the threads are discussing classic literature interspersed with nigger and faggot in every other sentence. Its an extreme example, but just talk about it like you would talk about anything else you're interested in.

Write an example of a literary or artistic discussion that doesn't like the dude I posted

>> No.14715473

knowing your audience makes it a lot less awkward, if you can actually predict what sort of things they will find interesting or boring. then it's not pretentious, it's you trying to tell a friend about something you think they'll like. but in a good friendship, people will still usually indulge each other a bit, so you need to know what you can get away with.

Books aren't how real people talk. You can't even write it out without it sounding cringe let alone saying it out loud.

Just stop caring. I always talk about what interests me, and lots have people have called me a lot of things, but at least I get to talk about literature.
