Reading through the classics I have been putting off, recently been through the hard scifi (Asimov, Dick, Clarke etc) and had enough of that for now. For a change of pace I finally read 1984 and liked it so I stayed on that track; what are the great 20th century scifi-ish dystopian standalones I'm missing? So far I have read and enjoyed all of 1984, Brave New World, Slaughterhouse 5, Canticle for Liebowitz and Farenheit 451. Where to from here?

Literally why is this so acclaimed when discussions about wuxia come up?

>there is almost no real plot progression for the first 200ish chapters
>aside from being a scammer with an autistic obsesssion with cultivating, Meng Hao has no personality or even goals.
>fight scenes literally consist of two people standing before each other whilst smacking their bags of holdings to draw out weapons, the winner of the fight will not be determined by skill or talent but rather by who has the higher realm, the better legacies, and the better weapons to spam. If Meng Hao happens to be weaker than you get to read a 10 chapter chase scene until he escapes.
>the cultivation is bland compare to Cradle, Desolate Era, or Coiling Dragon
>the realms all feel the same, and worse there's no real distinction between them. I frankly mixed up the realma because they were so generic

Feels odd to be mentioned in a book. Anyhow, I think Instantiation overall has been a dud--far too many politics and abrupt endings--and while I'm on the last story and plan to finish the overall collection, I am heavily disappointed. I liked the story 'The Nearest' because its twist was well done and is played smoothly. Genuinely asking, anyone/everyone else in the thread can answer to;
What's the market for a platform like Tumblr/Blogsites with support from Patreon donations like?

Say for example I wrote something that was conventionally unprintable, seen as a risky investment on the publishers part (200000+ word manuscript, extremely niche themes, extremely alien, 'DoA' Genre, etc) would someone be better off using a relatively "free to read" method and then play on peoples heartstrings asking for donations?

I realised a fantasy book in a podcast format and I think that might be the future of indie publishing. Most people are too busy to read, but many people work and listen to podcasts while they work. I don't see why releasing a chapter of a book every month or so would be a bad idea. The format is tried and tested: manga, comics, and order novels like books from Charles Dickens were released this way.

Then through gaining an audience this way you can sell merchandise, and once enough of the book is released as a podcast you can put it up for sale and have an audience ready and willing to pay for it. The only hurdles are writing the book, and finding a narrator willing to read it. Both are very doable.

My audio drama episodes are doing pretty good so far, with lots of room to grow. Having gone through the process its not as scary as you might think.

You can't just swap in IRL races for the ones in Conan, because that's not how the stories were written. For example, the Picts are correctly placed in Scotland, but are obviously based on American Indians, because REH was getting into westerns at that point in his life.

In the stories where Red Sonja is a minor character, it's implied that she's Russian, but I don't think this is ever confirmed. IIRC the northern races get lumped together because of that whole deal with them de-evolving into Yetis and then back into humans.

What had stopped you in your tracks and hit you real hard from your recent reads? This particular dialogue just floored me upon reading it because of how relateable it was:

>Despairingly, sometimes, I seek the comfort of a benign God, Sharilla. My mind goes out, lying awake at night, searching through black barrenness for something, anything, which will take me to it, warm me, protect me, tell me that there is order in the chaotic tumble of the universe, that it is consistent, this precision of the planets, not simply a brief, bright spark of sanity in an eternity of malevolent anarchy.
>Elric sighed and his quiet tones were tinged with hopelessness
>Without some confirmation of the order of things, my only comfort is to accept the anarchy. This way, I can revel in chaos and know, without fear, that we are all doomed from the start, that our brief existence is both meaningless and doomed. I can accept then, that we are more than forsaken, because there was never anything there to forsake us. I have weighed the proof, Sharilla, and must believe that anarchy prevails, in spite of all the laws which seemingly govern our actions, our sorcery, our logic. I see only chaos in the world. If the Book we seek tells me otherwise, then I shall gladly believe it. Until then, I will put my trust only in my sword and myself.

I myself have an atypical form of bipolar II in which my hypomania (a mental state typically characterized by euphoria, increased energy, racing thoughts and erratic behavior) lacks the erratic behavior component, meaning I get all of the benefits and none of the drawbacks. Less sleep is supposed to be a trigger for hypomania, so im worried fixing my sleep schedule will actually "fix" a part of my neurochemistry that is better off broken

A full-body cyborg breaks free of their behavioral restrictions and is able to decide their own life in galactic society that almost exclusively regards them as something that ought to be destroyed immediately without the slightest consideration. What will they choose to do?

Teenagers tend to have lower standards when it comes to prose ; publishers know this, so they keep publishing overextended series with barely any plot to maximize sales. There's a reason most YA authors only write YA, and when they try to write adult fiction they fail spectacularly.

do you ever wonder if it's a pitiful act of desperation to try and do what writers like Tolkien and Pratchett did when you know just from reading their life stories that you're too mundane to be anything like them?

Whenever I read the life story of some famous author, they were always a prodigy, always published their first work as a teenager, always always knew three languages and other such horse crap. it makes me feel sick reading that sffg. it makes me sick realizing that no matter what you do, your life will never matter because you weren't born someone like them

I'm not entirely sure that it is that easy, not even for them. Even if they were born with the gift to write well and have great imagination, I'm sure they had to work hard and have a good education where they were introduced to books very early in life. Most of it I think it really comes from education, not what you get in school, but even before that, at home. If you start reading and writing at a young age then it will be easier to learn and progress over the years. Just like other arts like music, painting, etc. That's why many authors defend that parents should start reading to their kids as soon as 6 months of age. Then comes hard work of course. But if you didn't get that early education going then it will be twice as hard. So yea, deep down it's not just up to you.

No. Cyberpunk is "High Tech, Low Life". Current china is actually a really good reference. Asia also frequently shows up in cyberpunk themes. Basically its about corporations or governments having the power to do whatever they want and everyone not part of the establishment is living in misery and barely scraping by. I suppose its kinda like socialism or communism in that regard. everyone is miserable except the ones at the top. Or in simpler terms you can watch every channel under the sun on your holographic TV but you cant afford to actually buy decent food.

I have read something some time ago i think it was HFY related. The premise was simple. Basically humans seem to be the common ancestor of all humanoid life in the universe for some reason and as such can breed with any race. This story was written as a guide to different planets and cultures from the perspective of a man who married an alien women and had to get used to strange customs. The moral of the story ironically if you are a human and get drunk in outer space, use prophylactics if you get your freak on, not because of any diseases but because human can impregnate everyone or bear anyone's offspring.

The problem is you don't want to write. You want to be a one of the Most Famous Writers Evarrrr. I'm working on my writing and the only thing I care about is honing my skills so that I write a damn good story worthy of publication, that readers enjoy and they want to read more. The only comparisons you should be making are to yourself. Is this revision better than the last draft? Is my technique better than in my earlier stories? Writing is one of the hardest fields to get into so unless you're willing to put in years of work then go back to vidya and binging seasons.

Yeah. I get the impression that not only is the series a "bread and butter" one (eg David Drake says on his blog that the RCN series lets him write other stuff) but also something she does as a pet project. They're mostly divided up into trilogies, so for example the first three cover the human colony ship returning and a crash program to tech up the aliens and resupply it, and the second one jumps forwards to the ship and characters leaving to recover people from the space station they left behind.

On the upside it's nowhere near as bad as the Vorkosigan series having 3 different reading orders. And they're fairly easy reading too.
