It's that time again, /lit/!

Make a post in this thread to roll. The penultimate digit of your roll post is the column, the final digit is the row.

http://www.MegaShare.com/?r=LitRoulette
has all the stories. Don't be afraid to roll multiple times if you like what you see.

Enjoy!

(Thanks to the anon who originally put this together. He is a hero.)

Wow, great story! It was Flannery O'Connor's "Everything That Rises Must Converge" about a young man just graduated from college living with his widow mother. The story resonated with me because I'm in the same situation.

The mother makes a big deal of the sacrifices she has made for him, of her dedication to him, of her love for him, and constantly reminds her son what he owes her. He can't stand the constant reminders. He yearns to be emotionally detached from her so he can break free and live in his own life in his own way, far from where he is now.

His attitude is embarrassingly familiar to me: he's haughty, arrogant, short with his mother, judgmental of her, constantly convinced he's right and she's wrong. He wants to show her how wrong she is about everything. When he's frustrated or nervous he retreats into a fantasy world inside his head, a land of daydreams where he is rich, successful, and on his own.

I'd never read O'Connor before but I'll definitely read more in the future.

Thanks, anon!

Used my review as another roll post, got "Boo" by Richard Laymon.

At first it looked like a stupid scary story about Halloween, but it got creepy really fast. Scary, funny, very enjoyable. It's not high literature but I had a good time reading it.

OP, there are a lot of new people on the board now. Next time you post this, remember to mention this is "/lit/ Short Story Roulette" so people don't think they're rolling for a book. Reading the responses in here, it looks like some people are confused.

Thanks for posting this.

>> No.1473129

This roulette only contains short stories. The smallest takes 5 minutes to read, the longest about an hour.

Hills Like White Elephants is only a few pages long. It also happens to be one of Hemingway's most well-respected and well-known short stories.

The download link in OP has all of the short stories from the image in PDF or text form.

>> No.1473132

is there a "/lit/ Normal Story Roulette">

>> No.1473144

>>1473132
In English, "short story" refers to any piece of writing less than novella length (~200 pages).

Some of the stories included in this roulette (like The Dead) are about 60 pages when published.

If you want to roll for something longer (like a novel or novella), you could add numbers to one of the recommendation images.

The lucidity, the clarity of the light that afternoon was sufficient to itself; perfect transparency must be impenetrable, these vertical bars of a brass-coloured distillation of light coming down from sulphur-yellow interstices in a sky hunkered with grey clouds that bulge with more rain. It struck the wood with nicotine-stained fingers, the leaves glittered. A cold day of late October, when the withered blackberries dangled like their own dour spooks on the discoloured brambles. There were crisp husks of beechmast and cast acorn cups underfoot in the russet slime of dead bracken where the rains of the equinox had so soaked the earth that the cold oozed up through the soles of the shoes, lancinating cold of the approach of winter that grips hold of your belly and squeezes it tight. Now the stark elders have an anorexic look; there is not much in the autumn wood to make you smile but it is not yet, not quite yet, the saddest time of the year. Only, there is a haunting sense of the imminent cessation of being; the year, in turning, turns in on itself. Introspective weather, a sickroom hush.
