I literally think of Schopenhauer as a father figure and imagine what he would say about my situation and the advice he would give.

Same, but I think of him as a grand father. I wonder if this is common among his followers.

I don't think there is anything unhealthy about it. Schopenhauer is one of the few authors who did not censor himself in the least and poured his heart and soul to his words without any pretense for appearances, and he did so with such a compassion and warmth that you can hardly read him without feeling it touch your deepest cores, melt it away, and replace it with your newfound wisdom. Such is his greatness.

The only mentally ill here are those can't see it.

is he the bloke who said (paraphrasing) if someone tells you they read and are still happy then they haven't read enough

Probably not. I haven't read anything like that by him and it doesn't sound like something he would say.

just read his Counsels and Maxims, it's a proto self-help book

Daily reminder the Schopenhauer could see the light but didn't investigate it in his personal life. His philosophy is fantastic but he didn't engage himself with it on a personal level; had he done so he could have produced truly great works

What light, you mean some sort of salvation? Does it have anything to do with total non-being like Mainländer?

After reading Kant, I decided to read Schopenhauer's On Suicide and On Women, as people always quote them on here. Maybe Kant set the bar too high but they were massively underwhelming. On Suicide didn't have a central point and seemed to just say that it was religion's fault that we condemn suicide (not pointing out that religion must stem from human nature if it was invented, therefore making the adversity to suicide rooted in nature in his argument). He then went on to argue that since we feel honour or sadness over shame at a loved ones suicide, it must be different to a crime, which seems more of a correlation over causation scenario (if you were raised in a family of rapists, they would feel the same way about rape, but this does not make it ethical). The only valid point he made is that punishing suicide attempts is always just punishing someone's inability to kill themselves over the act itself, which was more comical than philosophical of a point (still, funny and right).

On Women was equally bad, I thought. Most of his arguments are from Jerome and before (women are the cause of man's sin, etc.). He goes on to say that the logical solution is polygamy, although this seems to contradict everything he claims (as polygamy would only further female presence on men). The point he tries to make is that women are less dutiful than men, one I agree with, yet his arguments are all over. It was written in a manner which makes it seem his only experience with women is reading The Wife of Bath and meeting a prostitute.

dont forget that schopenhauer had bad relationship with his mother which could be the reason that changed his views on women

Did you only read Kant's essay on human races? If so, that's the equivalent of what you read by Schopenhauer. If you truly read Kant, I suggest reading Schopenhauer's critique of Kantian philosophy (appendix of the first volume of TWAWR)

I love how the simple minded starts seething as soon as he sees something he could never experience. It's fine, my dear, some things aren't for you. Go back to do whatever you've been assigned to do.
