Is there such a thing as reading too much?

Don Quixote and Madame Bovary went mad from reading too many romances.

I thought the emphasis there was on Romances rather than the reading itself, but I'm not sure..

>reader experiences a kind of reciprocal madness after reading too many books about characters going mad from too much reading

Excellent point. Both Cervantes and Flaubert thought Romances from the middle ages were bad for the brain but I think this can be applied to literature as a whole, in big doses.

But Romances from the Middle Ages were a bit like genre fiction today, weren't they? Is there such a thing as reading too much holistic/informative material?

Depends. Some were considered national Epics like La Chanson de Roland that describes Roland kicking ass in Spain. Others like the ones on King Arthur, weakened morality by making love affairs hot (Queen Gunievere and Lancelot made King Arthur a cuck). For the second question, imo, yes. A human brain can't retain that many facts or info unless you are a savant who can absorb info like a sponge but never do anything with it besides regurgitate it.

Arthur's patience, forbearance, general competence and courage were more likely models. L & G's 20 year guilt-ridden romance was entirely on them, cracks in their otherwise worthy characters.
