Is a difficult novel just a series of koans, or is it one long koan? What happens to the mind and the brain when a koan or multiple koans are uploaded? Neuroplasticity? Growth, emotional and/or spiritual? Does reading difficult novels /do/ something to us? If so, what? More importantly, do difficult novels get easier the more you read them? If so, why?

You can think of some novels as having koan quality but they are mostly fairly useless. Yes, you will get better at reading and analysing them the more you do it, but the utility to this is doubtful.

Why are you on /lit/ if you feel that reading has little utility? Just for the sake of literature?
