Was it a career move as suggest by Franzen?

>> No.14640891

No. He had a complication with his meds and the comedown was too much. The Pale King was shaping up to be a step above IJ.

Of course. You guys are still puzzling over this?

>> No.14640908

No, it sounds a lot like he just had some form of chemical depression exacerbated by a history of drug use

Also did Franzen really say that? The guy spoke at his funeral

Transparently so.
He killed himself to be cool, basically.
And it didn't work.
Sad if it wasn't so dumb.

>> No.14640922

If a writer doesn't immediately kill himself after completing his magnum opun, I consider him dishonest and a phony. Would a man, having produced a true masterpiece, really want to continue on living an empty life of a decline?

>To ignore, in his death, a component of what Franzen called "suicide as career move" is to see a person half-developed. Franzen puts it better in "Farther Away":

>In a sense the story of my friendship with him is simply that I loved a person who was mentally ill. The depressed person then killed himself, in a way calculated to inflict maximum pain on those he loved most, and we who loved him were left feeling angry and betrayed. Betrayed not merely by the failure of our investment of love but by the way in which his suicide took the person away from us and made him into a very public legend.

I think he killed himself after coming to terms with being alone at older age with no sign of his anxiety to decrease.

His medicated depression was only a contributing factor to reaching that stage.

>hurr his suicide hurt me, he must have done it just to hurt me, I am angry at him for being so selfish as to blow his brains out, how can he be such an asshole, I wasted all that time being his friend
Why are normies so cold and ignorant towards the suicidal? The fact the phrase "suicide is selfish" even exists should be an eternal testament to the nearly uncrossable gulf of vapid self-centeredness that surrounds the normie.

franzen always playing the redheaded stepchild, the man who could not even replicate DFW's comparatively modest gifts, the man who could not finish Moby Dick and claims reading The Recognitions was the hardest thing he has ever done, the equivalent to a full-time job

My fave is when normies say that no one is to blame when someone commits suicide except the person who dunnit. All of a sudden the people who bullied, abused, traumatized, neglected the person etc. are absolved of all responsibility
