Dropped, not responding to this thread

You should try reading the book. The story makes the most sense in view of its entirety.

One really ought to read Homer, and a host of other authors before considering a Popery abridgment

Hesiod is generally recommended, but how does the book start? There’s all sorts of events leading up to it

Just wait till you get to the part about the Trojan horse. it's sooo good. very immersively written.

It starts with some dudes getting angry over some girl or something like that, and then all of the sudden they are at war with Trojans because they were already in the middle of the Trojan War.

Figured as much, but I guess I'm looking forward to getting some more knowledge overall how life was like in that time period anyway.

You think it's going to work?

Is there a preface in your book?
This is one episode of several stories. The background to Paris and the gods quarrel over a golden apple play into the reasons for the war.

And then there’s the historical reasons for Achaeans raiding Anatolia like vikings

Not being an ass, but why do people buy classics when you can just check them out at a library?
If you really want to buy it because you want to write in it or draw dicks on the front, use thriftbooks or the overflow bookstore that a lot of libraries have. Barnes & Nobles and the like are for buying gifts for other people - there's so many better options.

Fagles is a decent accessible intro. I read his Odyssey. I’ve read Hamilton’s The Greek Way and she was also nice. I did read about the myths through Graves old book. Not sure how they compare. A fine starter pack, I’d say.

You should just breeze through it to get the gist and then re-read it. That's how you read any difficult text.

If you want the horse read posthomerica by Quintus Smyrnaea.
Its a Roman fan fic but its based on the plays fragments of the poems between Homer's. Its actually pretty good
