Been saying for years that Jason is the most sympathetic character in the novel...trying to keep his family together and his niece away from slutty behaviour.

How the fuck is he the most sympathetic when Benji exists? You missed the whole point of the novel, try again. Benji is more or less an angel or a dog or a clock/timepiece

Mentally retarded characters obviously don't count; they're sort of...asympathetic. They transcend that metric. Do you think Lennie is more sympathetic than George in Of Mice and Men?

I do. And they count very much.

I read this book and I still don't really understand what the hell it was about. I liked Quentin's section. Starting with Benji's part sent me down a spiral of confusion but I'm sure that's what he meant. I pretty much agree that Jason was justified.

Sometimes a story is just a story and not about anything. It’s a poor comparison but take for instance the legend of Zelda games. Autists insist it’s more than it is and some grand timeline and Nintendo threw them a bone for the sake of sales but really and truly it’s just a story. A retelling of a story. There’s themes and motifs and allegory buy some stories are just stories.

Quentin is an incel but also his chapter is so hard to understand.

Jason is one of the meanest characters I’ve encountered in all of literature. And please note I said mean not evil. But as repulsive as he is, I think Faulkner inserted some humor in there.

So what makes a mentally retarded character not sympathetic is that we realize they don't know what they are deprived of--their struggle is never articulated, or even recognized.
The reason Jason is more sympathetic is not only because he's the youngest child and basically inherited the downfall and disgrace of his older siblings, but because he is conditioned to always be struggling, suffering from the struggle, and turned angry and bitter because of it. He's conditioned to see the world as constantly attacking him and at times, he's not wrong.

Not saying Quentin's my favourite character, but his chapter is my second favourite (after Quentin's).
And second anon: don't worry, we were ALL confused after the first read through of Benjy's chapter.
