The real critique is this: you cannot have a marxist society without rearranging society entirely. Co-ops do work and don't require a vanguard state type situation, but the problem is these are largely ineffective at generating the money needed for things needed for production and thus cannot expand nor even start without external assistance. When society has been rearranged this way, it's shown that it cannot be implemented and you can say 'well that's not real communism or marxism', but really it's just that marxists ideas did not actually consider human nature and that they would be a big problem. He is like the climate alarmist saying we should just stop all carbon and petrol, except we would be plunged into an apocalypse if we did do that without first adjusting society.

I don't reject him, but his ideas were of his time and his work offers no way for us or anyone forward along that path in a modern world where the political, social, technological and culturally landscapes are different to a degree.

I think it's the old cliche of 'yeah it could work, but it seems to not'. And unfortunately real-world critiques, while they may not suit your abstracted and in a vacuum ideological arguments, are the most important refutations.

We are basically at a point where technological automation and even UBIs seems a better path forward than marx.
