No, they weren't. They treated Ivan in a perfectly normal way. He was a mediocre family man, and his family treats him accordingly. He was never particularly close to his colleagues either. Ivan lived an unremarkable life and died an unremarkable death. He would've treated any of the other characters in a similar fashion if they were the ones dying.
