I'm trying to write this novel about a kid who's all happy but then his friend dies and he's all depressed.

idk how to start, it's been days.

Describe some carefree days and some slightly erotic and confusing feelings with long grass tickling their legs in a sunny field, then have them flying a kite and the string breaks.

The kite is what's called a metaphor. It will plunge out of sight and be lost forever.
