Shit

>> No.14600843

Typical YA fantasy that only got popular because:
1. The author was young when it got published
2. Scholastic books fairs shilling it to children

Derivative and hard to stomach on a reread, but it was written by a literal highschooler. I respect it for that.

I read it all in middle school. I thought it was good then, for what it's worth.

Every day I'm thankful I didn't peak at 17 like Paolini. The guy shit out the most derivative crap and spent his twenties defending it. Imagine if you were most well known for shit you wrote as a teenager. You'd curl up and die.

I liked it when I read it around 15, I don't think I could stand it now. It's basically vanilla heroic fantasy and I have developed a distaste for anything Tolkienesque/Forgotten Realms-esque.

I agree with most people here, if you're under 15 it's definitely a very fun read. Once you're older though I doubt it'll be enjoyable, haven't touched it in fear out of fear of ruining it for myself.

>>14600879

Gormenghast is honestly one of the most enjoyable trilogies I have read so far. Sadly Mervyn Peake had some mental health problems and went slightly crazy so it isn't (atleast to me) 100% clear what the 3rd book is even about
