I’m gonna write it next year after I finish reading my 17 writing books that I started reading this year (2 and a half books down) while doing cardio at the gym, then I’m gonna read a few novels that have been on my bucket list, and once I’m done with all that I’ll start in 2021. I completely do not care about publishing, as I’m putting it online for free.

Just talking about it is no fun, and I find it gives a false sense of accomplishment and deflates my own excitement. Plus revealing it slowly throughout the story is way more compelling than just stating it outright. Self sabotage is a thing!

English is actually an agglutinative language related to Finnish but oppressed by Latin-centric nihilists. It's a lost dialect left over from the days of the Ancient Finnish Empire. Anglos are an engineered race designed by both the best and cruellest Finnish engineers and scientists and visionaries to, in the future (modern history), wreak havoc upon the world in retribution for the oppression of the Finnic races throughout history as they foresaw their demise and lessened innate power.

Wrong!

"Idealistic and full of hope, Jak Barnswallow grows weary of wasting his youth on his father's farm. He wants to make a difference in the world. He wants to be a hero.

Welcome to Genesis, a continent on the brink of a genocidal war. Two powerful nations stand at each others' throats, both with rigid ideologies that demand the annihilation of the other. In the middle stands beautiful Chateau Cascade, the castle on the waterfall. Young Jak dreams of the Chateau and of becoming one of its glorious Cascadian Knights, the keepers of this world's peace.

Times are changing for Jak and for Genesis. When he is thrust into the midst of a conflict that looms large over the entire world, he must decide for himself what kind of man he truly wants to be. Unlikely and decidedly unideal companions join him on this dangerous adventure, teaching him that sometimes a hero is not what you might expect or want it to be.

Above his struggle, the mysterious Lady Acelia, queen of the Chateau, watches, waits, and machinates. All will serve as pawns in her schemes."

Premise sounds fun but I hate the scheming master manipulator noble woman archetype. I ain't attacking you or your work, just something of mine. Also I think this premise sounds fun to me because I love Gormenghast.

Did you write it? Is it selling? How are you feeling after having finished a damn book? 99% of people never get to even start writing a word, and this stands ESPECIALLY true for the lazy assholes in this thread.
That's also what I'm striving for. Just finish my novel and publish it. Even if it NEVER sells a single copy. Writing a book is downright laudable, the fact that someone had enough dedication and discipline to put in the hours and the work speaks volumes. Literally.

Borne by Jeff Vandermeer ('weird', dreamy story)

Red Sister by Mark Lawrence (more traditional fantasy)

I have to ask about Licanius, were you bothered at all about the power levels? I only read the first book then dropped it, that ends with Caeden showing up with a magic sword and killing a hundred soldiers easily. I want to like it because the time travel aspect is really cool, but everything feels too easy, and I don't care about any of the characters.

What I'm writing can be characterized as "fantasy of manners" or "sentimental comedy"

It starts small and wholesome as we follow a shape-shifting creature infiltrating human affairs. We see into its mind as it plans its every move, how it goes through every minuscule detail, its mindset when interacting with different people, even down to picking clothing materials, combining different colours for outfits to achieve a certain effect, facial mimicking, body language, all that good stuff. It's mostly experimental writing, very focused on little details that can and will go unnoticed if speedreading.
A simple interaction between 2 characters can be described at lengths, for pages, from the way they chose to greet each other, the words they picked and why, each clothing piece and its purpose, what is being discussed and why, even the time of the day is being analyzed. I'm having a lot of fun writing this.

Of course, behind the scenes there is a lot of darkness and shadows floating about, and the astute reader could perhaps pick up bits and hints. Even the end revelation of the story is actually revealed in the first bit of the book (start of the second chapter) but even if I tell you this, and you read it, you still won't know until you get to the very end and you go "Ah ha!"

I'm a very big fan of Book of the New Sun, Foundation, Gormenghast. I like a simple story or even no story at all, as long as it's masterfully written and the details interwoven.

Im doing mil sci fi, with a dash of nick land and finance fiction. Its at 80k words. I completed one 56k short novel, now I am bringing it all together with a squeal.

The gimmick of this "world," is that FTL capable ships can go to any universe possible through a lot of potential universes very quickly. Makes for great action when there a Graham's number of intelligent ships.

Here's an except:

The Gship Inciting Incident came tumbling into space. Blone was taking it all in and trying to forget. Suicides increased several hundred thousand percent momentarily until laws were changed to redefine the term. People desynced and flooded out to other universes. Going faster than light became a commodity. AI fused with hyperspaced hardware as it made the stream watch credit card commercials. Surviving natives hawked voodoo mind mapping practices. State control ran through the local stack. Collective reality was now defined by bending many into one. Uncertainty had not ended. Adhocracy could only see an hour into the future. Earth declared a humanitarian emergency. Warship orders spiked. Between commercial breaks the stream was content with following their new president. Inciting Incident leaned down to the surface for a closer look.

Gluos had forgone sleep and ignored the non-trivial number of calls and messages piling into his administration. Finally abandoning solitude late at night. Wonks could not speculate on his policy as of yet. Media relentlessly tracked him. Waves intensely communicated emotions emanated from wherever he went. A panic under neon lights of City streets as he left a car. Unsynchronized bodies of a deranged attacker bursting outwards. Offenders were fielded and moved away instantly after. The single remaining weeping man was moved to the nearest acro. Gluos went inside with his head down.

An initial cabinet was formed in the bathroom of a downtown nightclub. Adrenaline and throx kept them hallucinating. They isolated themselves in a stall until supplies ran out. After a brawl with security they exited the building in the presidential coupe. The cabinet then met at a C-Town seafood restaurant where Gluos was seen vomiting into the ocean while hanging from the edge of a pier. Executive orders flowed from the most productive session of government in two years. Contentions over the final tab flared into smashed screens and pepper spray. Afterwards their location was lost for several hours. In dawn light a farmer’s hovering sheepdog drone caught a glimpse of his contorted face as he crashed a golf cart through a fence that bordered the presidential mountain chalet nested northwest in Arspem.

I'll give Borne a go, just to try and push myself into stranger territory. But if it doesn't hold my interest, then I'll fall back on Red sister.

As for power levels, I know what you mean. I rolled my eyes at that too. But I steamrolled into book 2, and the book did not going into the direction of OP super battles. Rather, it did a deep journey into Caeden's past, getting into philosophical ideas regarding theology, and questioning the ethical use of the powers everyone has. There are some ridiculously overpowered stuff that happens in book 2 and 3. But you have to understand Caeden's past, in order for it to come into perspective. And that's what the second book does. Thoroughly. The powers that characters have begin to matter less and less. While the ethics of such power are explored more and more.

Basically a swap of Humans being the dominant species but with Elves set in a post collapse, for the lack of a better term: "Viking-Age" setting.

>It's back to feudal days where Kings plot to rule what other kings have.
>Set after a fairly long time Human Empires fell - still haven't decided how long ago - during their reign they fucked the other races, both literally and figuratively.
>Humans while in their reign enforced a fake religion upon the Elves, see Classical Zoroastrianism as what I'm basing it off of, but with strict "No friends allowed" being enforced by the state.
>Very light Smut, I kind of want that one element to be shocking and people to go "That's disgusting". Not 80's b-movie "Let's put rape in our movie for T&A", but things that make the reader squirm knowing the real world complications and taboo.
>What 'Elves' were (Slavic inspiration) are not the Elves of today, since their "bloodline" consists of more Human Blood than Elven Blood, however they maintain some Elvish features. Mainly trope related stuff.
>Elven blood is rumoured to have a magical property to it, but only refined bloodlines can use the power of their ancient heritage (to what degree I haven't decided).
>Prophecies, Divination and Oracles are a major theme
>Main plot focusing on a family of Human-Ancestor Elves who's predicted to bring the "Ally", who will bring all Elf-folk under one old and ancient religion (Eyeing African and other Arabic religions for inspiration as a lot of them have some form of deification).

I don't think it'll be a publishable story given how I like to write dialogue as mostly melodrama, also writing action for me is difficult so it might be good practice.
We'll see, I might do an online release for it at some stage if people are interested in seeing how it's going.

I just finished Snow Crash on a friend's recommendation. Audible has a really good audiobook of it. The narrator has a good voice, he does different voices for each character, his dramatic reading of it is done very well, the audio flourishes before each chapter and between sections was a nice touch. I liked the book overall. The author has a lot of charm, considering half the book is stuff that the weird kid in high school who wear trench coats would think was cool, the book was never cringey which was quite an accomplishment. I rolled my eyes at the obvious racial resentments of the author but other than that it was a good listen. Ended a bit abruptly though.

I liked the little things the author would write to spice up the prose. i.e. "Hiro didn't even have time to assume the proper stance. That was okay though, because he had already assumed the stance." Made me smile. The book is sprinkled liberally with little sentences and mentions and quips like that. Overall enjoyed it, would recommend it to any fan of science fiction. /blogpost

Raven was a pretty neat character too. I didn't really see Hiro and Raven as specifically being contrasted. They hardly even opposed each other ideologically. Raven had no loyalty to anybody or anything, he only had a vague desire for revenge against everything around him and Hiro was just trying to save Juanita and not get Snow Crashed. They were enemies but only because of coincidence. That's how I saw it anyway.

I just found a blog called "Glorious Trash" that has a ton of reviews of old pulp novels if anyone is looking for some more offbeat stuff to read, clipping from a review of the "Phoenix" series of post-apocalyptic books:
>Phoenix sidestepped the swing as its momentum jerked the Pagan around, and roundhouse kicked into the lower back area on the follow through, shattering the punk's spinal cord and shooting fragments of lumbar vertebrae through his kidneys like small bore bullets. His bladder exploded, spraying his lungs with hot urine. The Pagan vomited up chunks of his stomach and flopped over backward, kicking his legs in the air as he shit his pants and died.

~15 years ago, I would've read something like this and been like "Wow, that's a really interesting premise anon". But now it sounds more akin to something like "This is like Dune/WoT/etc. but..."

I'm not saying you're copying the Herberts or Rigney/Jordan.
It's just that it sounds close enough to the point where I think "What makes this any different than what I've read already."
If you're focusing on stuff that you feel hasn't been done before or is underdone; then go for it.
But if you're writing another boy becomes a god story you'd probably have to take a step back.
Look at other possible stories that could be told that might stand out from already existing pieces.

Also, I guess you're implying either Sexual Slavery, Incest, Floor tiles or some other relatively hush-hush topic?
Keep that to a minimum. If you have to have something for the point of the story, fine.
It stops it from being one of those trash dinosaur-fucker meme novels you see people post sometimes.

To be honest I'd read a decent tale like that anon.
But if it's been written before, no one's going to care.

Flowery worded scifi with a ton of purple prose and detailed descriptions of what is being observed.
I'm talking hard scifi within what we understand as normal physics, but high concept. Star-powered matrioska artificial brains, Dyson swarms, terraforming, gas giant chainsaws, miniature black holes powered ships, star ascension and harvesting, generation ships, planet flinging, things like that. The novel has a dash of soft scifi in order to make things interesting and concepts have sense in the universe. Stuff such as aliens, telepathy, life beyond death, intergalactic conscience are present. These are not necessarily impossible to occur in the universe, but are not present in our own universe.

Fuck it.
It's about a culture of hyper religious and extreme vicious tribals whose entire history is just an absolute mess of violence and slavery who have in the past couple centuries started putting on airs of a collection of civilized house to try to curry favour with foreigners, when the topic of abolishing slavery comes up one of the houses with a reputation for being some of the hardest motherfuckers but are now almost completely neutered playing the politics game opposes it and the other houses see it as the perfect opportunity to get rid of them through all out war. After the head of the house, an absolutely abhorrent woman, is assassinated it comes to her daughter who was considered a complete failure and only took charge of the house because she was the sole heir. It's her responsibility to pull together the seven tribes that make up her house and reconnect them with their old tribal warrior ways and lead a bloody war path through the country, ultimately revealing just how much of a show this new "civilized" culture is as desperation increases and the other houses call upon the old tribes.

Thanks for the feedback anon.

>"It's just Dune but..."
I had that thought as well, I feel that while Dune may unironically be one of my greatest influences, I'm specifically avoiding Dune-esque lingo and manner of speaking of Religion/Prophecy/Futuresight and it rather being about people without such ability realising that prophecy is or isn't what it claims to be in reality.
Bit hard given that narrative coincedence is a difficult thing to get right.

>"I guess you're implying..."
I mean, you got it right with Incest.
The narrative reason is a spoiler, I see no problem with sharing it because it'd be revealed eventually in text: The Elven blood is so diluted to the point that some Elves literally are just humans with pointy ears, while others that have done selective inter-familial breeding have been able to "Strengthen" the Elven blood and "Reject" the Human blood, but not completely and not by much - but the difference between 0% Elven Blood and 5% Elven Blood (pulling the numbers out my ass, I'll work out the real values) is like being a level 1 fighter, and being able to cast Lightning Bolt.
I honestly don't see it cropping up as often as most people would assume. The presence of inter-familial marriage would be mentioned a fair bit I feel like maybe a good 1/20 of the concept relies on it being that way.
Gotta have naturally occuring lepers, hunchbacks and other inbred traits somehow.

>"If it's been written before..."
Honestly one of my biggest fears is someone saying "It's just like X" but I didn't know X existed or I hadn't read it.

Dune's language/dialogue choice is very specific. People in even the most extreme dramas do not to talk like the character's in Dune, so it should be a lot easier to write dialogue if you're worried about that.
The only thing were I can see you might be nailed is the use of religion and (I assume) the pitfalls and dangers of blind faith.
Like I said; don't do the boy becomes god story, we've got that already.

>Narrative coincidence
I feel like that's not something you should worry about immediately.
Outline what you want the characters to be doing, the general order of events and arcs.
It doesn't need to be a 500+ page right now, a lot of people write 100 pages, and then fill in any gaps and land up with an extra 50-100 pages naturally.

>That
Yes, keep reference to incest to the utmost minimum as possible.
I personally do not care, I jerk it to worse shit, but for the average reader that's a massive brick wall to climb.
The reason is solid but still in the realms of sex fantasy, kind of.
If the culture doesn't understand genetics to the same degree we do, then I think it's safe to say it's an okay-ish reason for that to be catalyst for incest. Otherwise, probably should cut it out for it not to be seen as a sex fantasy.
Also given the setting and the whole feudal lords thing; incest was a real problem/method used to preserve bloodlines, so I can see that being a valid enough reason to mention it - not for it to be a mainstay however.
>But Zoroastrianism is a real thing
Yeah but there's a reason why they're secluded and their practice of faith kept mostly secret though, and it's not because they have private weddings.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2020/01/08/romance-writers-america-cancels-awards-program-writer-racism-controversy/
>Calling the novel a “racist mess,” Milan, who is Chinese American, highlighted a plot line featuring Asian characters with “slightly yellow” skin and “slanted almond eyes,” and noted that the book depicted 19th-century Chinese women as demure, quiet and compliant. “The notion of the submissive Chinese woman is a racist stereotype which fuels higher rates of violence against Asian women,” she wrote. “It is hard not to be upset about something that has done me and my loved ones real harm.”

>Davis, the book’s author, responded to the criticism by filing an ethics complaint with Romance Writers of America. “These attacks on me have resulted in my losing a three-book contract with a publisher whom I cannot name because they fear having their own name linked with Ms. Milan’s,” she wrote, claiming the tweets amounted to “cyber-bullying.”

"I totally lost that non-existent contract I had"

>At the time, Milan served as the chair of Romance Writers of America’s ethics committee. Suzan Tisdale, a romance writer and publisher who works with Davis, questioned the appropriateness of allowing Milan to hold that position in a complaint of her own. “This is akin to putting a neo-Nazi in charge of a UN human rights committee,” she wrote, arguing Davis had been unfairly smeared as a racist after she “immersed herself in the Chinese culture for six years.”

>when the manager of the ethics committee is also ethnic
>and doesn't respect that you went on vacation to Thailand.

>The twin complaints lodged by Davis and Tisdale, who are both white, became public knowledge in December, when Romance Writers of America decided Milan had violated the group’s core mission of creating a “safe and respectful environment.” Just days before Christmas, Milan was informed of the sanctions she would face: a one-year suspension from the group, and a lifetime ban from any leadership positions.

>Even the writers who had complained about Milan’s tweets expressed some level of regret. Tisdale told the Guardian she had only wanted an apology and thought the punishment was too harsh, while Davis walked back her initial claims that she had “lost” a book deal, telling the outlet that the discussion about her contract had only been postponed. She claimed Romance Writers of America’s leadership had encouraged her to file a complaint and she felt they had “used” her.

Borne is starting to grate on me. At least 1/4th of the entire book is dedicated to wanting to fuck some skinny old man. If I have to read about the "planes of his face" one more time, I might scream. All the stuff regarding Borne is pretty interesting. But it's constantly halted to talk about the monotony of setting traps, and being in not-love with some sickly hermit. Every chapter is like this:
>La, la, setting traps, foraging, survival.
>Borne is doing something.
>But wait, Borne turned the idea on its head with his innocence.
>Oh god Wick's body is so thin, I'm so wet, fuck me, why doesn't he love me.

It's a short book, but man does it feel long. I feel like I'm too far to stop now though. I have to finish it just to say I did. It has all of the imagination of a bad Dreamworks film. Just a girl and her monster in some weird fantasy world. Something that should be a kid's cartoon, but they tried to make it appear more mature with sex and drugs.

When does the Cradle Series get good? I forced myself through book 1, and I'm on like chapter 2 of book 2 (soulsmith) and I'm still not really into it.
I've heard that this series was supposed to be wuxia done right with better prose, and a more coherent story but I don't find myself engrossed in either the story, the setting, or even the writing style.
I'm no stranger to the wuxia genre, I've read Coiling Dragon, Desolate Era, I Shall Seal The Heavens, Renegan Immortal, Against the gods etc., so I DO know that some of these series take a while to pick up.

I can only tell you that it will get stranger as it goes. As more unique powers are introduced, and you explore different land. But the premise will stay the same: Lindon needs to get stronger.

It's the very very very distant future but might as well be the past or an entirely other universe, such different are the times.

2 nations of excessively violent and mighty creatures have risen to dominance. Bat-like, and mosquito-like. Both of these creatures require blood to exist, and they allied together in order to subjugate, enslave and enact control upon the entire universe and even beyond. While the bat-aliens act as generals and leaders and masterminds, the quadrillions times quadrillions times quadrillions of mosquito-aliens make up for the thick of their forces, the main army, the horde.
It's a losing battle for every other specie. Nobody can stand up against this unholy coalition.
An organization of xenopologists, scientists, mystics, religious men, soldiers and common folk banded together to form a plan which hangs by a thin thread. A while ago a prophecy was discovered, of a god of hunger and devour and cold and darkness, a means of invoking such energies and seep life out of entire galaxy clusters at a time. The makers of this prophecy have been extinct for millenia and our group of protagonists try to unravel the mystery of this prophecy and their last chance of winning this battle for the survival of every living thing in the universe.

I couldn't read WoT. I started at least 3 different times and barely even got halfway through the first book. It's too meta for me. Farmer boy meets wise senior mage, his old life is threatened, goes on a quest.

Mistborn was good. I fucking liked it but I also read it in a very good period of my life, so I'll probably always associate Mistborn with comfy summer time in the bavarian mountains. The setting is good and I often read it for it alone.

Out of the three, Prince of Nothing probably has the greatest value. It's well written, intricate and it has a very dark and interesting setting. Magic is strong, as all magic should be and Kellhus is such an unnerving character that you can't help but keep reading and see where it all goes. Clear Dune influences but Dune is probably my favorite series of all time so I don't mind.
The second trilogy is better too, but only because they deal more with the fantasy elements of the setting, whereas the first trilogy was basically crusades with some magic and coomer monsters sprinkled in.

Agilus is an incel but for severian

Woman: how have I wronged you, anon? It seems to me that you have wronged me, or tried to.
Anon: First by entrapment. You carry a vagina that men have historically fought wars over, without you even caring. As the owner of the vagina, it was your duty to give me at least some semblance of attention.
Anon: Secondly by refusing to entertain me and respond to any of my advances and flirting and texting. In our society, it's required to at least reply to me, instead you ghosted me and went for Chad's cock.
Anon: Thirdly, by the manipulation with which you tried to get to me after your ex cheated on you. Unlike you, who get 1000 texts a day from guys, I never get a text from any girl so when you texted me, I lost my nerve and had to drop everything in order to come and comfort you and buy you cake. And here I am. I call you to give me the pussy.

Those self pubbed fags are burnt out. They wrote all they could write about already. Instead of pacing their releases, some release multiple times a month (with poor shit writing) to grab as much bux as possible. They are now out of ideas.
It's why that faggot E William Brown releases a book every 3 years, while milking the subscribestar users dry for one chapter a month. Brown may be a faggot, but I got to respect his hustle in milking those beta fags of their money.

Because reading words vs having read them to you, is certainly different.
How you read certain passages vs others reading passages to you will give a different interpretation.
Your inner voice that can take on many forms vs some other person's reading voice that can take on at most 6-12 unique voices.

It makes sense. Plus, most audiobooks ads are fucking atrocious, advertising for you to read Harry Potter as your first free book is fucking stupid.

I've made an on-going fantasy series that is listenable in podcast form.

https://open.spotify.com/show/3JsBH7hfegrCMIRJbQynbc

It's about people cursed by a magical storm, and the journey they take to a great magical mountain in an effort to wish themselves back to normal.

The first episode introduces the lead, and includes these things:
+ sexy vampires
+ fighting / violence / mild gore
+ comedy / sexual innuendo
+ intrigue, courtroom drama

It's made to be like watching a movie in your head. Lemme know what you think.

Book 4 takes a while to pick up, since the first half is basically reintroducing the main cast again. Just remember to never ever trust a Dunyain.

Also Kelmomas was a mommy poster before his time. Bakker was on the cutting edge of the mommy fetish.

Black company (book 1) thoughts:

This drags a lot once it hits the final chapter and Cook realises he has to drag the reader through multiple final battles. All of the neat pacing tricks are gone and I don't think the action stands up as well on its own without them.

Any recommendations for books where modern technology is forgotten and is treated like magic by people who don't understand it. More modern is better since things have changed a lot since the 1950s, but I wouldn't mind older stuff either. Pic related has some of what I'm looking for, but it's more focussed on the Earth dying, and I'm more interested in the forgotten technology aspect. It can also include future technology like ray guns and space ships etc., but the key point is that people have been since forgotten what they are like in the Book of the New Sun. Including magic like Vance is fine too.
Basically books where people find guns, computers, cars or explosives and think of them as something mystical and beyond human understanding.

It's probably because of Croaker involvement in the plot. In the beginning he was rarely consulted. He went looking for the action and later on action goes to him. That's probably the reason of the fast pace at the start and the jumping around.

The beginning was interesting with the whole fantasy-modern world, with factories and child laborers and the whole london-like industrial revolution in a fantasy world.
But then suddenly the main character was smoking pot and getting gangbanged by urban english youth in dirty mall bathrooms and it really fucking took me out of it.
It made me realize I have a problem with blatant sex in fantasy. I think Book of the new sun was the most sensible about it, and I'd like if authors were at least subtle when writing sex. Sex should be implied when it happens but nowhere does the author need to specifically mention sucking cocks and getting double penetrated lmao

It's why I dropped Broken earth too. Main character was discovering ugly truths about the world and using her powers, then suddenly she was having a threesome cuck relationship with 2 black guys. Literally.

Fuck modern fantasy

Outside of sequels the new KJ Parker is the only thing that stood out and I'll be putting that off because it's too similar in plot to other stuff I'm reading. Fuckall in january and the yearly previews I looked at were bad and just full of publisher pushed stuff.
In terms of sequels the followups to Finder and Cry Pilot are the ones out in the next few months I'll read ASAP alongside the final Map of Unknown Things book which is out but not uploaded to the pirate resources I checked yet.

I could follow stuff more closely but it would probably mean following authors on twitter and the problem with that is you find out just how annoying some of them are.

The base assumption that we can do better, be better, without the world devolving into crapsack ruins. Yes, the Empire fell in Foundation, but the Foundations themselves were a path back to even greater glories. Contrast with most cyberpunk literature or even The Expanse, where everything is always terrible all the time and expanding offworld just makes things worse.
