In my experience it's a scapegoat, albeit one that's hard to get over. You pad yourself from failure by saying "h-heh, I wasn't really trying. If I was trying then I could do it" when in reality you probably just quit at the first sign of failure. Ultimately it'll stop you from pursuing anything meaningful and gradually eliminate all the real pleasure from life, since the challenge is gone. If you can accept that there are some things you just can't do (and it's okay that you can't do them) then you'll be well on your way.
