My great-grandfather's King James New Testament he bought when he came to America and started teaching himself English. He always said you don't need the Old Testament and that it's just a bunch of dark old folktales with little to do with Christ anyways, so I'm satisfied with what I have.

Do you actually believe in the Abrahamic mythos or is it primarily a belief system to give order to your life?

I've noticed many 4channers practiced suboptimal lifestyles due to their isolation and hedonism. Some succumbed to nihilism, depression, addiction, etc. Religions give advice that can help you improve in some dimensions, while giving you motivation through hope of eternal paradise, and fear of eternal torture. They're basically collaborative literature projects which which organize people to be more productive through mythologies. Most every major culture had creation stories, reasons to be prosocial, explanations for the inexplicable, etc.

You can give as many psychological analyses as you want, it’s fundamentally a spiritual belief that goes beyond rationalism. Leibniz etc. have tried to defend God using logic but for me it is personal and goes beyond the ability of words. I am sorry that I can’t explain it. Maybe it is stupid, but that’s not how I feel. I recognise that to most people that isn’t a good enough explanation, but thats the only way I can put it. I am quite sure the love I feel is not illusory

I wonder if you are aware of the deep irony of this post of yours. Let me cite my large print, red-letter Thomas Nelson KJV, which mother gifted me a few Christmases ago:

"For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and /from/ the things which are written in this book." (Rev. 22:18-19)

Now that I look, this thing was printed in China so it's suspect. I also have a small-print Zondervan KJV. t. atheist

KJV is not good and hasn't been taken seriously in academia by seculars and nonseculars for decades. I don't give a shit if it's the best selling or most quoted by authors, it's a corrupted translation.
If this is your first time reading the Bible, I recommend reading a study Bible.

avoid the KJV/DR because of corrupted sources and subtly "slanted" translations like the ESV/CSB/NASB. Do NOT fall for 'le poetry' meme as DR/KJV literalists will preach like this brainwashed plebian >>14563396 and his entirely ridiculous YouTube link. The NABRE/NRSV retains 90% of the poetic structure, I assure you, except this time it's accurate. Knox is a fantastic translation in its own right and provides many innovative and faithful readings (as well as retaining Jerome's unique readings that are valuable)

NABRE because It's what you'll hear at Mass
NRSV for a more protestant/American reading
Knox because it's my favorite and the best for an English reader that doesn't know Latin or Greek or Hebrew.

This is why I suggested reading multiple translations. While I love the Knox translation, it works best when you have knowledge of a more literal translation or when read side-by-side with another.

With a more literary translation like this, it makes those passages that you know well (that you often recite with out looking at the Bible) come to a new life in prayerful reading. The Psalms in the Knox translation filled me with renewed spiritual vigor. The books of wisdom fill me with dread and hope.
Book of Wisdom 3:1-9

But the souls of the just are in God’s hands,
and no torment, in death itself, has power to reach them.
Dead? Fools think so; think their end loss,
their leaving us, annihilation; but all is well with them.
The world sees nothing but the pains they endure;
they themselves have eyes only for what is immortal;
so light their suffering, so great the gain they win!
God, all the while, did but test them,
and testing them found them worthy of him.
His gold, tried in the crucible, his burnt-sacrifice, graciously accepted,
they do but wait for the time of their deliverance;
then they will shine out, these souls,
unconquerable as the sparks that break out,
now here, now there, among the stubble.
Theirs to sit in judgement on nations, to subdue whole peoples,
under a Lord whose reign shall last forever.
Trust him if thou wilt, true thou shalt find him;
faith waits for him calmly and lovingly;
who claims his gift, who shall attain peace, if not they, his chosen servants?’

Here’s the “abridged Bible” I made by tearing out all the extraneous and redundant content, in an attempt to reduce it to the entirety of its philosophical and literary essence and see how much smaller it would be. I probably knocked out about a third of the content but I’d be hard pressed to tell you exactly what I removed since its been a few months since I started the project. And of course there is a certain level of subjectivity in this editing that I could not avoid.

Well because it was a carefully considered curatorial editing process by someone from without the religion, looking in and trying to reduce it to its most distinctive and characteristic parts (therefore very different from the Nicene councils). And I would argue I didn’t destroy the book but make it much better for an unaffiliated reader. And don’t be so sensitive. I didn’t do it to be edgy and upset Christians. But come on man, its just a book to me. Why would I personally feel bad about taking pages out of 1 copy of it?

I recommend that everyone read the Didache Bible. Great commentary based on the Catechism is provided for almost every segment of scripture, and there are also apologetics for different doctrines scattered throughout the text. The DR is also great as most are aware, and I mostly like to read it for the old language and traditional feel of it.

I flip through translations on my phone and go through a greek translation when I’m really checking. Whats so bad about ESV? I have a CSB study Bible and I vastly prefer the ESV as they take several liberties with verses. ESV seems very accurate to the original without all of the fluff something like NIV has.

This is mine. It's well used and well loved, and the maps have fallen out. I found a hardcover copy for $5 in a Value Village as a backup. I also have a copy on my Kindle. I also like NKJV and NLT.
