Has /lit/ ever written a book? Any tips or tricks?

I started writing and journaling to de-stress from work and now I think I want to try a novel. I don't think I want to publish it, not until I finish it at least.

No I came across this channel, not sure what to make of it yet. But since I'm writing mostly for myself I was going to use this as an opportunity to be creative. I have been writing short stories in my journal and I wanted to take on a bigger project.

Published my novel last year after about 2 and a half years writing. My main advice is understanding your weak points and not forcing yourself into creating something that is too outside your skills.

Another key thing is making sure you are writing about something that will keep you engaged after you hit the mid-point and start to just question what the point even is in continuing.

Having a slight support base could also help.

thank you, how long was your novel? I've been writing short stories only 10 pages long on average and now I want to try at least 300. I feel like its a challenge just beyond my skill

>so, you want to be a writer?

if it doesn't come bursting out of you
in spite of everything,
don't do it.
unless it comes unasked out of your
heart and your mind and your mouth
and your gut,
don't do it.
if you have to sit for hours
staring at your computer screen
or hunched over your
typewriter
searching for words,
don't do it.
if you're doing it for money or
fame,
don't do it.
if you're doing it because you want
women in your bed,
don't do it.
if you have to sit there and
rewrite it again and again,
don't do it.
if it's hard work just thinking about doing it,
don't do it.
if you're trying to write like somebody
else,
forget about it.

if you have to wait for it to roar out of
you,
then wait patiently.
if it never does roar out of you,
do something else.

if you first have to read it to your wife
or your girlfriend or your boyfriend
or your parents or to anybody at all,
you're not ready.

don't be like so many writers,
don't be like so many thousands of
people who call themselves writers,
don't be dull and boring and
pretentious, don't be consumed with self-
love.
the libraries of the world have
yawned themselves to
sleep
over your kind.
don't add to that.
don't do it.
unless it comes out of
your soul like a rocket,
unless being still would
drive you to madness or
suicide or murder,
don't do it.
unless the sun inside you is
burning your gut,
don't do it.

when it is truly time,
and if you have been chosen,
it will do it by
itself and it will keep on doing it
until you die or it dies in you.

there is no other way.

and there never was.

(Charles Bukowski)

Neil Gaiman and Gene Wolfe were great friends while Wolfe was alive. Gaiman once said to Wolfe, "Gene, I think I have finally learned how to write a novel." And Wolfe replied, "You never learn how to write a novel. You just learn how to write the novel you're on."

That's always been the best piece of writing advice I've ever found. Every book is different. There's no single, concrete method of how to write a novel. Every writer is different, too. You just need to jump in with both feet and see how you do things your way.

Her videos are well done. Whether the message is of any merit who is to say? She states her credentials and limited experience in many of them. I believe she also states that these tips are geared towards pop lit. I also enjoy watching them but I'm not a writer. I enjoy watching them cause she is interesting, Bi, and cute.

I started journaling a couple years ago to keep my mental health in check. Just scribbling down by thoughts whenever I needed release valve. By now Im typing most things I write. I've moved up from only doing personal daily journaling to now writing schizophrenic stream of consciousness essays and deranged short stories. Eventually I'd like to have enough material worthy of making into some sort of combined work. But Im still learning how to put structure into my writing and not just have psychotic bursts of manic creativity. Does anyone know of a good place where people exchange their short form writing? I need to start getting feedback. Also another thing Im looking for is some kind of self-guided curriculum I can work through. Creative exercises prompts and skills and such

Yeah I don't think I could stomach mingling with r*dditors. It's such a shame that reddit has basically absorbed all the niche forum communities and cultures then redditized everything. I miss the old internet ecosystem. Now youre only choice for online community is like 4 shitty corporate websites that all rip off of each other

>> No.14557898

I have wrote a short story once, about 100 pages or so. It was back in 2008 I was like 14, and won some kind of contest involving every high-school in paris. We had to write in English (I'm french, it was some sort of English language learning initiative) a short story about 10pages long during the year, I was in first year of high-school and won the whole thing. It was about a depressed and failed reporter that started making shit up to have something to sell, then started spiraling into crime and a vicious circle of getting satisfaction, recognition and fame for his crimes. I don't remember thinking that much about it, I just had the thing in mind and I've been a massive reader my whole life so it was pretty well influenced by a lot of diverse genres and authors. I just typed it with passion and my teacher liked it so much he made a print of it and gave one to me, so there is actually a single copy of it remaining as I've lost mine.

Other than that I've been writing here and there some poetry, some short stories whenever I feel like it and some songs. I'd say my biggest advice to you is keep the activity fun and don't force yourself, a lot of people will talk about like getting feedback and writing to improve or whatever but I feel like unless you want to make a living out of your writing fuck this bs and have fun telling what's on your mind.
