The Metamorphosis was such an overrated piece of garbage. Come on, using a man turning into a gargantuan insect as a metaphor for the dehumanization of the middle-class working man?! Who comes up with this shit?!

Kafka, you get a 0/10 in my book.

I quit reading The Castle after having read 130/450 pages. I thought there was a plot. There was none. The point of the story is that a gromatici is mistakenlly hired for a job that wasn't needed to begin with, then he tries to find who is to blame. Not to mention he finds a girl, and after 15 minutes asks her for marriage. Very random. I was like "what"? Very interesting plot, yay.

Kafka = one of the most overrated writers I've heard of. I also couldn't stand the Castle, even though the Trial was nice.
And yes, I agree that the Metamorphosis was a pile of stealing dung beetle food.

Why a cockroach, OP? Honest question, I didn't read the book in English. Any mention to a cockroach in your version?

I thought it was a moth.
I just noticed that nowhere in the book it's mentioned the kind of insect he is, but I could swear it was said in the book that he was indeed a moth.

it never mentions the actual bug but from the description its taken to be a cockroach most of the time

I think it's just that whenever this story is brought up, people mention a cockroach, so you automatically think he is one even though it's never said.

Kind of how the forbidden fruit is supposedly an apple.

I honestly never read an English version of the book, but if there's a mention to a specific species/order the translator fucked up. I think there may be a reason why Kafka decided to not give information about the type of bug.

The reason being that Kafka wanted the reader to come up with his own image of a horrible creature which would create an uneasy if not disgusted opinion of the main character.

As for the book being bad, OP, idk if you read a good enough translation. The book is strange, if anything.

>> No.1456115

To be fair, Kafka didn't think he was any good.

Don't blame him, he wanted his writings burned.
