What am I in for, lads? Bloom said this was better than LOTR.

Bloom is dead, his opinion is irrelevant. Only the opinions of the living matter

>> No.14539227

Depends what you want. If you want an exciting adventure, it’s not that. If you want a well-written (better-written than LOTR, but a lot more baroque), atmospheric satire full of grotesques who don’t really do a lot but are weirdly compelling and sort of funny, you’ll probably like it.

Holy fucking shit bloom died. Had to Google it. I've been out of the country a lot since September and totally missed it.

Yeah he finally keeled over. It wasn't so much of a shocker for me because he was nearing 90 years of age.

It's the other way around. Only the opinions of the dead matter.

I wonder what Bloom would have thought of NGE. Which Shakespeare play would he have compared it to?

It's fucking beautiful. 90% of its worth lies in that, and that's a worthy enough place for it to be.

You'll have to pretty quickly get over the fact that the characters are all stupid. It's rare to read a smart book almost exclusively about stupid people, but the people of Gormenghast are a special kind of medieval-peasant stupid that barely exists anymore, and not at all in the West.

If you find it's getting to alien to grasp, read up a bit on Mervyn Peakes life. He grew up in a compound in China before it was Commie, and a lot of his understanding of things comes from that.

prunesquallor and steerpike aren't stupid

>> No.14539687

>>14539672
Not exactly, but their decision-making capabilities are pretty damn shoddy. They're largely operating on the same ridiculous, infectious internal logic that suffuses the castle. Steerpike ducks it at first, but eventually it infects him. And prunesquallor tries to remain at an ironic distance from it, but he never manages to overcome it when he really needs to.

the prose is outstanding, but other than that it's quite forgettable imo.
basically it's a well-written, but uneventful book.
style over substance maybe
