I agree that he should begin with the Greeks.
But if he is just starting out, I would advice against reading original works. They might appear too complex and assume a certain degree of background knowledge (when Plato talks about myths and invokes Presocratic philosophies) and the dialogue form and somewhat antiquated style can also be perceived as off putting.
I’d recommend “The dream of Reason” by Anthony Gottlieb. If you can read German I’d also suggest “Die philosophische Hintertreppe” by Wilhelm Weischedel. That’s how I got interested in it during my adolescence.

I think this is a better introduction than a history of philosophy.

There's a summary of it online that goes over all the rules, it won't cement in your brain if you go that route though. Most of the books in that chart are at least 300 pages long, so you might as just put in the week it would take to read each of them. It's better to invest the work upfront than a struggle over time. In other words, those that practice get their failures over with early, those that don't will fail all their lives.

One important thing to mention is that there is philosophical knowledge, and philosophical understanding. By itself, the explanations of “ontology of this guy, ontology of that guy, etc.” are only good for taking a test, and are as useful as lineages of ancient gods to a modern person. You need to question what we can say about the world around us, and how we can do it at all, yourself to follow the thoughts instead of reading about them.

>> No.14532677

>>14532615
Doesn't your second statement contradict your first one? By reading ontologies later philosopher are you not giving yourself the tools to question the previous ones more adequately? You should always remain true to yourself when coming to terms with the ideas of authors, but isn't that easier with a wider breadth of understanding and context?
