What do we think of penguin books?

>> No.14500300

>>14500289
They can be good and bad, it's more of a case by case basis.

>> No.14500341

>>14500289
all the ones ive seen have a stupidly long amount of pages that arent the actual content

>> No.14500351

They're just fine. If you're going for classics I think Oxfords are just a bit nicer. Once memeguin have rolled out their horrendous new-design black classics they're completely fucked though.

You're thinking of Oxford.

overrated.

ok at best, most are shit.

I really doubt you've read most. Penguin random House has released like 40,000 books.

Not bad. Some inconsistency with the sharpness on some book pages tho.

I want to get Penguins version of Demons because I like the cover, but I prefer Oxford/Everyman's library quality.

I like their covers, both orange and black.
Dont know about content as much, I'm sure they are fine though generally.

only buy them if they're english lit, otherwise case-by-case basis for translations.

No.

If this is a serious question then I'm sorry, I don't think you'll ever experience the euphoric exaltation that is inevitable individuation.

Good annotations, nicely edited text, and low prices. B-but my materials. Fuck off faggots, Penguin is on par with Oxford. I personally own some of their titles and while Penguin generally wins (Paradise Lost Penguin is more faithful to Milton's text and has very helpful notes while its Oxford equivalent overmodernizes things and fucks Milton's metre irreparably) Oxford is not that bad on average.

>> No.14502285

Theyre good, I like to keep them in my fridge keeps em nice and preserved stops the pages from yellowing as quickly

1. Absolutely not
2. You're comparing the first rung on a ladder to the second. They're both bottom of the barrel in binding and build. Muh materials is a valid argument not to buy Penguin, hell even their hardcovers are made out of plywood and camel-spit adhesive.

Did you do the thing where you fold the cover around the spine to make it easier to hold? This is your fault if you did, because you are not supposed to do that to paperbacks that large. It damages all books technically, but it ruins doorstoppers.

Not that anon, but a lot of these are just abridgments or short stories/poems taken from longer works. Not a terrible thing if you just want to sample some of these authors, but you're almost always better off just getting the books that these stories actually come from. Case in point: that Boccaccio book at the very top, "Mrs Rosie and the Priest" contains only 4 short stories from Decameron, a book which has 100 short stories in total
