Just read it, if you enjoy it re-read it with a copy with more footnotes/info/etc type of stuff. There's a lot to the book, but I found just reading it was quite enjoyable, you'll pick up what you pick up, and if you want more, there's plenty of options.

Just enjoy the humorous adventure story that opens the book and don’t worry about interpreting symbolism or anything. It’s going to get darker, more philosophical and take a lot of byways and digressions but stick to it and you’ll be rewarded. Once you’ve signed on to the Pequod there’s no escape.
