How do you refute people who argue along the lines of "There are people in africa starving, you shouldn't be depressed." ?

By not giving a fuck about people in Africa

Talk about the autism that is the population density in Africa and how AIDS and lions and AIDS infected lions will kill them before starvation does anyway so there's no point in worrying about their hunger.

That people are suffering elsewhere has nothing to do with the fact that someone else—despite being better off financially, etc.—is also suffering, and does nothing to mitigate that suffering.

If someone is suffering in a worse fashion than you are, that doesn't mean that you aren't suffering as well The sort of people who use the starving African people argument are the same type of people who tell those who are clinically depressed to "just cheer up."

>Africa
We brought them civilization. They sold their kin to us. Then we tried to expand, and they resisted.
Their country is no place to farm now. Yet they have no plans to move to other grounds where they can farm.
They come before our houses now and beg us for our assistance.
And we are to pity them?
>No, but just generally. Why would you be depressed when there are people who have it much worse than you.
Actually, they are partly right. I'm guessing you are depressed because you lack a purpose in life. Poor people, or people struggling to make a living, can't be depressed because they have a goal they strife for; well, when they do anyway.
