How to be forgiven for sins:

You have to be remorseful AND ask God for forgiveness (check), promise to God you'll never do this again, and get rid of any kind of profit/benefit from this sin.

So if I were a thief I'd have to do steps one and two, then give back all the money, then even go as far as to lose all the fat off my body because I gained this weight with stolen money.

Run that by a priest (a decent one not one of those compromised western ones) because that's how we do it in Shia Islam, it may be different for you. I thought I should share since we're both Abrahamic.

But please keep in mind, despairing in God's mercy is one of the worst sins you could commit. Never doubt that he will forgive you.

Honestly dude, just start reading the Word, the New Testament. It is a rewarding experince because there will be passages that speak to where you are in life. That is the power of the bible. I believe that anyone can read it and find passages that speak to where they are at in live or what they are struggling with.

When I was an "atheist" attending Catholic school forced to go to periodic confession, I told the priest I didn't believe in God and I literally cried. Priest gave me a comforting smile and pretty much told me my penance was to continue my education.
