We live in the age of the fan theory.

In ages of old we once had theoretical frameworks concerning economics, art, history, politics, religion, etc... Today this has all been forsaken in the name of the fan theory. Meaningless speculation concerning trivial characters in trivial worlds created by frauds. We have replaced critical thinking with the equivalence of children playing with toys alone inside of their minds. We are alive to see the ruin of western civilization while everyone endlessly speculates about the trivial details related to the next flavor of the week media craze.

We live in the age of the fan theory.

no technology has just made "intellectualism" available to the masses
most people emulate things and people they don't fully understand

There isn't anything even slightly intellectual about fan theories. Are you one of them anon?

Cringe. Insecure English professors only started making theories after they got jealous of the achievements of Physics in the 20th century.

it's always been like that.

people will always crave escapism over the latest acclaimed whatever. it's pure narcissism to think all people SHOULD appreciate the Criterion Collection, NYRB, etc.

I'm fairly certain the point he was making was that when the doors of intellectualism are opened to the unwashed masses, then what they will commence doing will cease to be intellectualism since they lack the "intellect" part of it. Hence his use of " "

People think they're smart but they're just retards being fed memetic lines and symbols. In this manner the average ape is indeed akin to an NPC. Using the correct words or symbols in correct order allows manipulation, almost like writing a line of code into them. /pol/ has been injecting it's memetic code into the mainstream for a while now, but (((they))) have been doing it much longer.

What's so ironic? I'll make it clear and say I don't mean all of (((them))), mostly it's the world elite which happen to have vastly over representation of (((them))) compared to anyone else.

More or less. What we need to understand is that old structures won't do anymore. What good is university if one has everything online? What good is religion, if one has a better communion talking with strangers on the internet on a singular subject (literature, kpop, gaming, politics of the kind you like, you name it)? What is a president if he tweets like anyone else? And who am I if I tweet like a president or a famous artist?

In this sense, everyone feels authorized to say whatever they want. That wouldn't be much of a problem if the judges and evaluators were not the people themselves, moderated by algorhytms. People reject warm neutral opinions and ideas, they want straight answers. Conspiracies and "fan theories" gain an advantage, since it's easier to convince people of a secret big answer than to believe in complex and articulated actual explanations of how things work.

Progressives try to embrace that with no respect to those who are confused by the changing times. Conservatives have no idea what to do so they preach and seek to enforce the old structures once again. Odd ideas pop up, final solutions, cartoonish villains and heroes. No one has time to read.

Yes, a quibble. The humanities are right now in the middle of another fad of adopting digital technology and practices from computer science, which charlatans will also misuse.
