It's my favorite book.

Read Hilda Rosner's translation.

Hesse had an inherent sense that to become exceptional you had to dip into the mediocre distractions of life, first.

In "Demain" Sinclair has his bouts with bar-hopping, just like Siddhartha--for a time--perfumes his hair, wears fancy clothing, and is all about pussy.

His characters go through journeys to become individuals; he's was such a terrific writer.

/lit/ likes it. I personally have a problem with it. over the course of the text I started to hate Sid more and more as the book went on. I thought it was cool how he got out to see things at first but he sort of came across as a dick after the initial leaving home part. also, I was surprised and disturbed (I wasn't expecting it) by the homosexual undertones later on in the book

I loved both Siddhartha and Steppenwolf. I thought they were just...wow. Siddhartha was more beautiful in some of its prose I believe, but in Steppenwolf I connected so much to the character of Harry Haller it was scary. And also the book was beautifully written. So both that I have read have been absolutely amazing. Thinking of going to The Glass Bead Game or Narcissus and Goldmund next.
