Is the folio society edition of moby dick good/worth the money? It’s my favourite novel but I don’t have my own copy (I read my parents copy when I was a teenager), I want my own copy to read it again and to be able to read it again at any time. Any other editions that are better? Non-hardbacks need not apply

Folio are nice entry-level fine press books with nice art. There's leather-bound editions from Franklin Library and Easton Press around the same price point that should be easily available second hand. I have an Easton copy that's very nice, but the text block is slipping a bit.

Folio Society is for the YouTube crowd. Get the Everyman's Library edition.

It probably not going to be on sale, but wat for the new year's eve sale before buying.

There has be a inbetween overpriced folio and decent Everyman copy.

I read my Folio C&P this week. I don't think I would buy another Folio even on the cheap (C&P was only $30). It was certainly a nice binding, I liked the illustrations, and I primarily got it as a hardback of a particular translation (it seems like only Penguin has rights to or publishes McDuff anymore), I have to say that the book itself was exceptionally unwieldy and the paper thickness was awful (too thick to properly lay flat, nevermind how heavy it becomes). Besides specific translations I myself would rather just pick up an Everyman's Library binding. Seeing as Moby-Dick is English, unless you're desperate attached to the cover art, EL seems the better purchase to me all-around.

I'm a philanthrope of public libraries of the future. I'll be saving the taxpayer a lot of money. And I also am the taxpayer. Ergo ipso facto dorito I buy my books out of a transcendent self-interest

I've been considering getting a copy of the Folio Moby Dick too because I want a nicer copy than the OWC paperback I have. It's so expensive though, I'm probably going to end up going with an Everman or something instead when I finally do pull the trigger.

The latest edition of Moby Dick from Folio used a Chinese printer and has a bunch of quality issues. I prefer the 1974 folio release. Pic related.

Leather hardcover books look ostentatious and very gaudy. Are these going to last longer than everyman copies?

All Eastons have seen bindings. Everyman over the last fifteen years or so has transitioned to glues bindings, which will not last nearly as long.

>Leather hardcover books look ostentatious and very gaudy.

Leatherbound books can look nice, but those Easton Press editions you always see posted in shelf threads are terribly gaudy.

Too lazy to look it, but IIRC, this is false. They switched to glued bindings for certain books at one point (I think it was for those with shorter page counts) but all current editions are smyth-sewn.

I heard that the specific number of pages is 300. It's guaranteed to by sewn above that.
