Does genius necessitate eccentricity?

Reading about Erik Satie for example, he was obviously very eccentric and his music was also eccentric but obviously evidence of great talent. Writers like Kafka, DFW, Dostoesvky (just to name some that immediately come to mind) were also obviously quite eccentric. I can think of a few writers however who lived apparently rather normal lives, but there's still something that tells me that being a little weird, or at least willing to express oneself completely, is necessary to produce great works of art.

As a genius myself, it's more of a byproduct in some cases, nothing more.

eccentricity is the afterglow of a journey to places neurotypicals would never go. each little quirk or abnormality was a treasure or a scar picked up along the way. you will either understand this or you won't.

no it is just a common symptom of it
some people try to fraud genius by acting eccentric, and sometimes manage to fool those of us who are on the more gullible side

If you're smarter than others by a good amount, you will be different than them. It is unavoidable, the best you can do is master social skills and people so that people like you a lot, which is also a form of standing out.

I'm not a genius, but I'm up there.

I am undeniably a genius and saint. You could learn a lot from me. However, due to your own hubris, you have shooed me away. That's ultimately your loss.

Thank you, but I am not a good investor, sadly. That is kind of important in this day and age. I made some bad investment decisions in the past.

Satie has been retroactively refuted by Shaykh Réné Guénon.

>Concerning non-vocal music, by which I mean one involving any use of pitched musical instruments, it is humbly and with all deference my opinion that all such activities should be abandoned in favour of purely vocal chants handed down through the oral tradition. It is more than likely that if a free reign of music was permitted in a society displaying even a slight state of decadence, there would remain very few musicians who display a true understanding of the traditional order and the purpose of music within it, which is a role purely subordinate to that of the traditional institutions; instead, as in the case of Europe, we might face ourselves with certain groups infiltrating the musical tradition and subverting it from within. Certainly, the historical record would bear this out. The events of the past few decades with the emergence of the most vile and repulsive 'composers' such as Erik Satie and Erwin Schulhoff offer the perfect example.

Writing does not provide for a regular lifestyle. Most people live a life around a fixed and structured schedule of closely-related social and professional obligations. They also have different concerns, especially in terms of how they use their 'intellectual' energy. Most people without that structure and without much responsibility act 'oddly'. Night club waitresses, for example, are as eccentric as writers, just stupider.

Well, do you think a genius is someone who's an extreme version of normal, or someone who's unusual? And if the latter, do you think their unusualness will be constrained to some little area? That someone will be a really weird author, but perfectly ordinary in every other way?

Perfectly possible. Look at Kafka for example, outwardly quite normal but internally quite mental. Same with Pessoa.

>Does genius necessitate eccentricity?

I would say no, simply because a genius is always unique and almost could be considered an enigma.

We cannot attach said qualities to those men so as to produce genius in a factory or produce them in an assembly line.

This has been a great difficulty even up now, at the best, society ( at least the scientific society ) can offer the very talented breeding grounds like some respected universities etc. but it is not certain do they produce a genius.

I would take Newton or Tesla for example, eccentric loner virgins with weird interests. You cannot produce such men using some sort of formula "practice this at age 4, practice that at age 12".

out culture prizes that ideal of the eccentric genius but eccentric genius is repulsive to most people in day to day life. it's a mixed message & makes you never want to release anything.
