why cant i just sparknotes all the general popular philosophy books (descartes, kierkegaard, hume, kant, hegel, nietzsche etc.) and read the obscure shit by myself?

no i was reading hume's an enquiry concerning human understand and while i do appreciate hume's prose and the comparisons he contrasts with objects

I will probably forget the specifics of the book anyway, and i will get the same knowledge that i would from just going over good notes and videos in a much quicker way.

however, of course. reading it all would help improve my verbal iq and i would actually be "learning by myself" rather than just being told everything by someone.

Read the more modern philosophers, basically starting with german idealism yourself because thats when things start to get a bit debatey and modern academics today even disagree on their interpretation

I’m just saying that that won’t be very much even with a couple hours on Wikipedia and with lectures. Your brain won’t make the same permanent connections it would with a longer book and you’ll certainly be missing out on large portions of it.
