there's plenty of interesting things left to say given how different much of civilization has become in the past 20 years, what does reading literary criticism have to do with any of that?

My mom's big in the world of literary criticism. Literary criticism is very important to me, but only in the sense that it paid for my childhood. Other than that it's worthless.

And I would advise you to amend your grammar whilst forming a scathing remark; It could leave you open to an equally vicious retort.

one of the best critique books that I read is Ship of Fools: An Anthology of Learned Nonsense about Primitive Society by C.R. Hallpike. It really gives a perspective about how unique european culture is, and how we cannot notice that because we're swimming in it. It attacks rationalism, the noble savage and human nature in tribes with minimal outsider contact. It's an easy read too. Hallpike also discusses the idea of Chomsky about universal grammar and he gives some good arguments against it. Pretty based book.

You may amend it for me, O great one, once you've mastered capitalisations, lest I beat you to it.

As a noted literary critic, he knew very well what he was doing (assuming this quote is accurate, quotations are very frequently misattributed or made up). There are several "viola jokes" which shit on violists (as opposed to violinists, the latter commonly thought of as the superior performers; imagine lead guitar vs. bass guitar for a pleb example). The authors of these viola jokes, which disparage the instrument, the orchestral unit in general? Violists themselves.
