It’s a novel written by mexican author Juan Rulfo about a man who visits his recently deceased mother’s village to look for his dead beat dad Pedro Paramo. Now, this sounds like the plot from a gas station novel but the way Rulfo transposes rural Mexican-village scenery (which was still pretty common at the time) with surreal imagery it’s pretty fucking amazing. Borges called this “one of the best novels of literature”. I’ve read this book nearly 4-5 times in my 22 years of life and every time I read it again it’s an entirely new experience. If it weren’t for “The Savage Detectives” by Bolaño this would be my favorite novel.

That's the book. It's legitimately so good that it was the reason that pushed me into learning the language so I could explore Latine American literature. Also El Llano en llamas.

Try “Battles in the desert” by José Emilio Pacheco. It provides a good idea of what life was in Mexico City in the 50’s. Also, search for the essays of José Vasconcelos (specially “The Cosmic Race”). I’m not aware if it’s translated to English. Nonetheless, this particular essay illustrates the roots of the ideas on race that most Mexicans have (but are starting to crack down thanks to identity politics).

I finished this like a month ago and it was absolutely beautiful. Inspired me to work on some poetry about ghosts.
