Blavatsky is quite possibly the greatest con artist of all time, in terms of what bullshit she pulled off. My favorite story about her has to be when she told a room full of followers that she received messages from unseen forces through envelopes that appeared from thin air, and to prove this told them all to close their eyes, then just dropped an envelope in a corner and told the guy closest to open his eyes and pick it up. Absolute bullshit, but extremely profitable. Her bullshit meld of Buddhism, Islam, and Russian orthodoxy did help to inspire all around mad land Baron Roman von Ungern-Sternberg though, so it all checks out
