I have a choice of 2 English electives in my bugman degree. What literary period should I focus on? The reformation, romantic, modern, or contemporary? Forgive I’m fairly young and still a pleb when it comes to the canon.

start with beowulf and the domesday book, no translations

I figured I should start with the earliest stuff, I’ve already read some of the Hellenic epics and I imagine that’d be a good progression.

before you actually take me seriously you should know i was shitposting, the domesday book is basically a big property appraisal of everyone in england after the norman invasion so the king knew how much to tax people, it's written in latin and i don't think anybody would expect you to actually sit down and read it

Ah, I see. I wasn’t being facetious when I said I’m fairly ignorant about this stuff.

why would you mislead him like that? :(

Metaphysical and early modernist.

but imagine how funny it would have been if he learned medieval latin just to read a big book of eleventh century tax appraisals
i'm chuckling just thinking about it

Medieval Latin is not difficult to read if you: a) know Romance; 2) own a bilingual edition.

Now classical Latin is quite hard, even if you can read Medieval Latin and have a bilingual edition. There are things that just don't make sense if you don't study the grammar.

t. too lazy to study the grammar

If you've been brainwashed by /pol/, don't take modern or contemporary under any circumstances.

Otherwise it's up to you, romantic or modern would be my choices and they're also going to be easier for someone who is a "pleb" than reformation.

Op here, that honestly would be really funny. I accidentally become less of a pseud than most of /lit/ just to read some medieval accounting.

I’m fairly apolitical
